There is a strain of thought that runs through certain corners of the American right, earnest, wounded, and ultimately useless, that believes the cure for a century of foreign policy catastrophe is to pull the eagle’s wings off entirely. Bring the troops home. Shut the bases. Let the world sort itself out. America, they say, should be a republic, not an empire. A city on a hill, not a garrison on every hill.

It sounds principled. It sounds like something a Founder might have said.

The men and women who hold this view have watched their country bleed for thirty years in deserts that had nothing to do with them, spend trillions of dollars propping up governments that despised them, and bury friends who died for objectives that were never explained and never achieved. Of course they want out. Of course the word “intervention” makes their skin crawl.

A nation that flinches cannot survive the twenty-first century.

The Trauma Response Has No Place at the War Table

When a man is badly burned, he becomes afraid of fire. This is understandable. Human, even. Left uncorrected, though, it becomes a disability and man who cannot approach a stove cannot feed himself.

The isolationist right has been badly burned. Iraq. Afghanistan. Libya. Syria. A generation of young Americans sent into the grinder for objectives that had nothing to do with national security and everything to do with the ideological projects of a foreign policy establishment that was never held accountable for a single catastrophe it engineered. The anger is definitely legitimate. The diagnosis, that these wars were wrong, that they were fought in the interests of parties other than the American people, that the architects of these adventures should have faced consequences they never faced, is correct in every particular.

The problem was that America’s power was exercised by people who did not give a single thought to American interests when they exercised it. The solution to that problem is not powerlessness.

An America that dismantles its military, withdraws from every forward position, closes its bases, and retreats behind its oceans does not become safe.

China does not become less ambitious because America becomes less present.

Russia does not become less aggressive.

They expand into the space. They always have. They always will.

Let us be honest about the last fifty years, because the isolationist is owed that honesty before we explain why his prescription is still wrong.

Vietnam was a strategic miscalculation prosecuted through the systematic deception of the American public, fought at the cost of fifty-eight thousand American lives for objectives that were never achievable by the means employed, and concluded in defeat. The men who sent those boys to die faced no consequences. The lesson drawn by the political class was the need for better public relations.

The Gulf War was perhaps the last American military engagement with a coherent strategic rationale, the defense of a critical energy corridor and the demonstration that territorial conquest between states would not be permitted. Even there, the objectives were promptly abandoned the moment they became inconvenient, leaving a wounded Iraq to fester for a decade.

The post-9/11 wars were a generational catastrophe. Afghanistan consumed twenty years, two trillion dollars, and the lives of over two thousand American service members, and ended with the Taliban in control of the same country they governed on September 10, 2001. Iraq was built on manufactured intelligence, prosecuted on the basis of theories that had no relationship to the actual culture and politics of the region, and its aftermath produced ISIS, Iranian regional dominance, and a Shia crescent running from Tehran to the Mediterranean, the precise geopolitical outcome that the architects of the war claimed to be preventing. Libya was reduced to a slave market. Syria became a proxy killing field. In every case, the question of what any of this had to do with the security and prosperity of the American people was not seriously asked, because the people asking the questions and the people making the decisions were operating from an entirely different set of priorities.

The neoconservative project, liberal democracy promotion, humanitarian intervention, the reshaping of the Middle East as a precondition for Israeli regional security, the use of American military power as a tool of ideological transformation, was never an American project. It wore American uniforms and spent American money and buried American boys, but its logic was alien to anything that could honestly be called an America First foreign policy. A class of people whose primary loyalty was to an abstraction, the “liberal international order,” colonized American foreign policy, and their secondary loyalty, in the Middle East theater specifically, was to a foreign state.

All of this is true. All of it should make Americans furious. None of it makes withdrawal the answer.

Replace the logic. Replace the objectives. Replace the class of people who decide how American power is used. Keep the power.

The Hemisphere Belongs to Us

The first principle of a genuinely America First foreign policy is one that used to be uncontroversial: the Western Hemisphere is the American sphere of influence, and no hostile foreign power will be permitted to establish a meaningful presence within it.

Every great power in history has operated by the same logic, applied to whatever territory providence gave them. The Monroe Doctrine was the declaration of a security perimeter and the announcement that the Americas were not available as a playground for European rivalries. Strategic clarity of a kind that American foreign policy has almost entirely lost.

That clarity needs to be recovered and radicalized.

Today, China is building port infrastructure throughout Latin America. Chinese telecommunications equipment is woven into the networks of a dozen countries in our neighborhood. Fentanyl precursors flow from Chinese chemical manufacturers to Mexican cartels and from the cartels into American communities, killing a hundred thousand Americans per year. The Chinese Communist Party has made a deliberate, sustained, generational investment in establishing economic and political leverage throughout the Western Hemisphere.

This is a national security emergency. Washington is treating it like a trade dispute.

An America First foreign policy recognizes that our hemisphere is our strategic depth, our resource base, our defensive perimeter. We need to make clear, through diplomacy first, through economic pressure where necessary, through the credible threat of force where required, that hostile great power competition will not be conducted in our backyard. We need to rebuild the relationships with our actual neighbors that a generation of incompetent foreign policy has degraded. We need to integrate the economies and security architectures of the Americas in ways that serve American interests while providing genuine development and stability to nations that have legitimate grievances with the way the United States has historically treated them.

This is the foreign policy of primacy, focused, regionally appropriate, and honest about what it is.

Allies as Instruments

The second principle is a rethinking of what alliances are for.

America currently maintains a network of alliances, basing agreements, and security guarantees that were built in the aftermath of World War II for conditions that no longer exist. NATO was designed to contain Soviet expansion into Western Europe. The Soviet Union does not exist. Japan and South Korea were protected because they were rebuilding from destruction and were incapable of defending themselves. Japan has the third-largest economy in the world. South Korea has one of the most capable militaries in Asia.

The current alliance structure functions less like a network of partners than a network of dependents, nations that have offloaded their security costs onto the American taxpayer and used the resulting savings to build welfare states and trade surpluses at American expense. They are not contributing to American security. America is subsidizing theirs, at cost to itself, because no one in Washington has been willing to have the honest conversation about what alliances should require.

Allies are not charity cases. They are instruments of American power projection in regions where it would be logistically and politically prohibitive for American forces to operate directly. A fully armed, capable Japan is America’s forward presence in East Asia. A rebuilt European defense architecture is America’s containment perimeter in the North Atlantic.

Think of it in anatomical terms. American power is the central nervous system. Allies are the fingers and toes, extending reach, providing sensation, enabling grip in places the body itself cannot easily go. But fingers and toes do not set the direction of travel. They do not determine what the hand grasps. They execute. They extend. They are useful because they are capable and responsive.

This requires allies to actually build and maintain capable militaries. Honest burden-sharing agreements with defined obligations and defined consequences for non-compliance. America must stop treating allies as children who must be protected from the consequences of their own choices and start treating them as partners who are expected to carry weight.

It also requires America to stop letting allies, any allies, dictate the objectives of American foreign policy. The relationship in which a small, wealthy, nuclear-armed state in the Middle East effectively controls American military engagement in the most volatile region on earth describes a broken hierarchy. The tail is wagging the dog, and the dog has been paying for it in blood and treasure for thirty years.

America can have a working relationship with Israel. America can share intelligence, conduct joint exercises, maintain diplomatic and economic ties. What cannot continue, for any nation serious about its own sovereignty, is allowing another country’s security objectives to function as the default settings of American foreign policy. American policy in the Middle East should serve American interests: stable energy markets, counterterrorism cooperation, prevention of nuclear proliferation, and the containment of powers that directly threaten American citizens and American infrastructure. Where those objectives overlap with Israeli interests, cooperation makes sense. Where they diverge, America acts for Americans. This is not hostility. This is what sovereignty looks like when a country actually means it.

The New Containment

The concept that guided American foreign policy through its most strategically coherent period was containment. George Kennan’s insight, that the Soviet Union could not be rolled back by direct military confrontation but could be held in place, denied expansion, and ultimately exhausted through sustained strategic pressure, gave American policy a logic that it had previously lacked and has largely lacked since.

Containment was the patient, disciplined application of American power to a specific strategic objective: preventing the expansion of a hostile system until that system’s internal contradictions consumed it. It required a strong military, not to fight a global war, but to make the cost of aggression prohibitive. It required a network of alliances, as forward pressure points. It required economic tools, intelligence capabilities, information operations, and the willingness to apply all of them with strategic patience over decades.

The successor to containment should apply the same logic to the conditions of the twenty-first century. The threat is a constellation of antagonistic foreign influences, Chinese economic and political penetration, Russian destabilization operations, Iranian regional aggression, the drug and human trafficking networks that serve as the logistics infrastructure of organized crime and cartel governance across the hemisphere, that collectively degrade American security, corrupt American institutions, and extract wealth from the American people.

New containment means making Chinese economic penetration of the hemisphere unprofitable. It means building the infrastructure and relationships that offer alternatives to Chinese investment. It means using American financial power, the most formidable instrument of statecraft ever assembled, to impose costs on Chinese behavior that make the current strategy untenable. It means rebuilding American manufacturing capacity so that the dependency relationships China exploits cannot be sustained.

New containment of Russia means ensuring that European allies are capable of deterring Russian aggression without requiring American blood. It means removing the energy leverage that Russia has used for a generation to coerce European governments. It means supporting, at arm’s length and with American interests as the explicit justification, the independence and sovereignty of states that serve as buffers between Russian ambition and the stability of the broader European order.

New containment of Iranian influence means pursuing an American Gulf policy, not an Israeli Gulf policy, not a Saudi Gulf policy, but an American Gulf policy, that keeps the Strait of Hormuz open, prevents Iranian nuclear weaponization, and reduces the economic leverage that Iranian proxies exercise over governments across the region. Military force remains on the table when American interests are directly threatened, and so does restraint when they are not.

identify what actually threatens American security and prosperity, apply American power against it in proportion to the threat, and maintain the discipline to distinguish between what is an American problem and what is someone else’s problem being marketed to us as our own.

Why the Military Must Be Strong

None of this works without a military that can back it up.

Diplomacy is the art of making other parties believe that cooperation with you is preferable to confrontation. That belief requires that confrontation be a credible option, and credibility requires capability. A military that has been hollowed out, that cannot project power at distance, that lacks the logistics to sustain operations, that has been consumed by social engineering projects instead of warfighting excellence, stops being a deterrent. It becomes an invitation.

America’s military has been both overused and underfunded for the purposes that actually matter. Overused in theaters that served no strategic American interest, wearing down equipment and burning out the professional force in counterinsurgency campaigns that were never winnable. Underfunded for the kind of peer-competitor deterrence that the current environment requires, long-range strike capability, naval power capable of denying Chinese maritime aggression in the Pacific, hypersonic weapons development, space and cyber capabilities that are increasingly the decisive domains of modern conflict.

An America First military posture inverts these priorities. Fewer deployments to places that don’t matter. Massive investment in the capabilities that deter the powers that do.

This also means rebuilding the defense industrial base. A military’s credibility is ultimately a function of the industrial capacity behind it. America’s capacity to produce the weapons systems, munitions, and platforms that modern warfare requires has been catastrophically degraded by decades of offshoring and consolidation. Rebuilding that capacity is an economic issue, an employment issue, a national sovereignty issue. The strong military is the precondition for everything else on this list. Without it, every other element of the strategy is wish fulfillment.

The choice before the American right is between an American foreign policy that serves American interests, executed with the full power of the most capable military and economic force in human history, and a continuation of the bipartisan consensus that has spent that power on behalf of everyone but the American people.

The isolationist’s answer is to put down the weapon. The America First answer is to take it back and aim it correctly.

The next fifty years of American foreign policy should be organized around three propositions.

First: the Western Hemisphere belongs to the American sphere and hostile foreign influence within it will be contested and ultimately expelled.

Second: American alliances exist to serve American strategic interests, and allies that do not carry their weight will no longer be carried. Third: the instruments of containment, military deterrence, economic pressure, intelligence operations, alliance management, will be directed at the powers and forces that actually threaten American security, not at the projects of foreign lobbies and ideological factions that have no accountability to the American voter.

Abstract

What began as a Cold War proxy calculation and arming Saddam Hussein to contain post-revolutionary Iran evolved over four decades into one of the most destructive and dishonestly prosecuted sequences of military interventions in modern history.

This dissertation traces the full arc: the Reagan administration’s deliberate facilitation of Iraqi chemical weapons use in the 1980s; the manufactured intelligence campaign that drove the 2003 invasion of Iraq; the catastrophic consequences of that invasion including the birth of ISIS; the systematic immunity enjoyed by those responsible; and the current war against Iran, which mirrors the 2003 deception campaign while in several respects surpassing it in brazenness. The throughline connecting these episodes is a recurring institutional willingness by the American executive to lie to its own people, manipulate intelligence, and wage war under false pretensess with virtually no legal accountability at any point in the chain.

I. Introduction: The Long Arc of the Lie

There is, or at least for a long time, was, a temptation to treat the 2003 Iraq War as an isolated catastrophe, a one-time failure of intelligence, nerve, and democratic deliberation. The historical record does not support this framing. What the full timeline reveals is a clear pattern: a coherent, recurring set of behaviors by the American national security state in which enemies are constructed, our threats are fabricated or amplified, prior geopolitical relationships/influencers are concealed, and democratic institutions are bypassed or actively deceived to authorize military action.

The Iraq War cannot be understood without the 1980s. The 1980s cannot be understood without the 1979 Iranian Revolution and American strategic terror at losing its anchor in the Persian Gulf. And the current war against Iran cannot be understood without Iraq. Both as precedent and as direct consequence.

This is not to assert or argue that American foreign policy is uniquely evil among great powers. It argues something more specific and more verifiable: that senior American officials have, on multiple occasions spanning multiple administrations, deliberately lied to Congress, to the public, and to international bodies in order to conduct military operations they knew could not survive honest democratic deliberation. And that this behavior has been, without exception, rewarded rather than punished.

II. The Foundation: America Arms the Monster It Later Hunts

2.1 The Strategic Logic of the 1980s

To understand why the United States fabricated a case against Saddam Hussein in 2003, one must first understand why the United States spent the better part of a decade making him. The 1979 Iranian Revolution had overthrown Washington’s most important regional client, the Shah, and produced a theocratic government openly hostile to American interests.

The Reagan administration, like the Carter administration before it, regarded the revolutionary Islamic Republic as an existential threat to American dominance of the Persian Gulf oil complex.

When Iraq invaded Iran in September 1980, Washington saw an opportunity. Iraq under Saddam Hussein, a secular Baathist dictatorship brutal toward its own people but manageable in its foreign policy, was an instrument ready to hand. The policy that followed was one of deliberate, sustained support for a regime that American officials privately acknowledged was genocidal.

2.2 The Chemical Weapons Complicity

Declassified CIA documents have established that the United States possessed detailed, real-time knowledge of Iraqi chemical weapons use against Iranian troops beginning in 1983 and provided intelligence to Iraq that directly enabled those attacks.

American intelligence officials conveyed the location of Iranian troops to Iraq, fully aware that Hussein’s military would attack with chemical weapons, including sarin. The Iraqis used mustard gas and sarin prior to four major offensives in early 1988 that relied on U.S. satellite imagery, maps, and other intelligence.

This was not a, sort of, passive complicity. In December 1983, President Reagan dispatched Donald Rumsfeld to Baghdad as his Middle East envoy. A visit that resulted in the famous photograph of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein. This was at a time when the U.S. was secretly aware that Iraq was using chemical weapons against Iranians almost daily.

One former U.S. intelligence official summarized the posture pretty bluntly: “Although we publicly opposed the use of chemical weapons anywhere in the world, we knew the intelligence we gave the Iraqis would be used to develop their own operational plans for chemical weapons.”

When Iran brought a resolution before the UN Security Council condemning Iraqi chemical weapons use, the United States lobbied its allies at the UN to vote for a “no decision” stance against the resolution.

In 1988, Saddam used chemical weapons against his own Kurdish population at Halabja, killing approximately five thousand civilians. The Reagan administration sought to obscure responsibility for the Halabja attack by falsely accusing Iran of being responsible. The same Saddam Hussein who would later be presented to the American public as a uniquely monstrous threat. A man who “gassed his own people”, had gassed his own people while on the American payroll, with American intelligence, and with American diplomatic cover at the United Nations.

2.3 Dual-Use Technology and Biological Materials

The material support was not limited to just battlefield intelligence by this point. U.N. inspectors identified many United States manufactured items exported from the United States to Iraq under licenses issued by the Department of Commerce that were used to further Iraq’s chemical and nuclear weapons development and its missile delivery system programs. The executive branch approved 771 different export licenses for sale of dual-use technology to Iraq. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control sent Iraq 14 separate agents “with biological warfare significance.”

The same weapons programs that the Bush administration would later cite as justification for invasion were partially built with American components, American credits, and American diplomatic protection. This history was structurally central to the 2003 deception, because it meant that senior officials making the case for war, including Donald Rumsfeld himself who had direct personal knowledge of, and responsibility for, the very weapons they claimed Iraq still possessed.

2.4 The Green Light for Kuwait and Its Revocation

American support for Saddam Hussein continued until the day he invaded Kuwait in August 1990. The relationship between Baghdad and Washington was founded on a common fear of and deep enmity toward Iran, and it continued through the Reagan administration and into the first Bush administration until the very day Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Former U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie met with Saddam Hussein on July 25, 1990, eight days before the invasion of Kuwait.

The transcript of that meeting, later made public, showed Glaspie telling Saddam that the United States had “no opinion” on Arab-Arab border disputes. Whether this constituted a green light for the invasion has been debated, but the timing and language were unambiguous: the United States did not warn Saddam against attacking Kuwait, and Saddam, predictibly, proceeded.

The Gulf War of 1991 shattered the alliance. However, it did not produce regime change. The decision not to march on Baghdad, made by the elder Bush and his advisors including Dick Cheney and Colin Powell, would become the unfinished business that haunted and ultimately drove the 2003 invasion.

III. The Sanctions Years: Manufacturing Grievance, Preserving the Threat

3.1 The Sanctions Regime and Its Human Cost

Between 1991 and 2003, Iraq existed under one of the most comprehensive sanctions regimes in history. The stated purpose was to compel Saddam to disarm and comply with UN weapons inspections.

The actual effect was the systematic destruction of Iraqi civilian society. Studies by UNICEF and independent researchers estimated that sanctions contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children through preventable disease, malnutrition, and the collapse of the health infrastructure.

The 1996 “60 Minutes” interview in which Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was asked whether the deaths of half a million Iraqi children were worth the policy and replied that “we think the price is worth it” which encapsulates the moral calculus at work.

This period matters for the 2003 war in a specific way: it entrenched Iraqi resentment and social fragmentation that would later fuel the insurgency and sectarian civil war that followed the invasion. The sanctions decade was not a prelude to a stable post-Saddam Iraq; it was a decade of imposed institutional decay that made post-invasion governance nearly impossible.

3.2 The Inspections Game

Throughout the 1990s, UN weapons inspectors, UNSCOM and later UNMOVIC, conducted extensive operations inside Iraq.

Their work was the subject of constant political manipulation by both sides. Iraq did obstruct inspections at various points; it also, as was later established, destroyed most of its WMD capacity after the Gulf War and chose strategic ambiguity over transparent compliance, a catastrophic miscalculation by Saddam that the Bush administration later exploited.

What the inspections record shows, in retrospect, is that the system was working. By late 2002 and early 2003, inspectors under Hans Blix were finding no evidence of active WMD programs.

Hans Blix warned government officials not to equate unaccounted-for weapons with existing weapons. The gap between official claims and inspector findings was not a matter of interpretation. It was a chasm and it was being deliberately maintained by the Bush administration to prevent the inspections from achieving the disarmament that would have removed the pretext for war.

IV. The Road to Invasion: 935 Lies and the Architecture of Deception

4.1 The Decision Before the Evidence

The Downing Street Memo, dated July 23, 2002, eight months before the invasion, records MI6 chief Richard Dearlove’s assessment following consultations in Washington.

His conclusion was straightforward: military action was now seen as inevitable, the decision to remove Saddam had been made, and “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

This single document forecloses the most charitable interpretation of the WMD failure, that it was an honest mistake. Dearlove was not a disgruntled outsider or a political opponent as sometimes described. He was the head of British foreign intelligence, reporting after direct engagement with the highest levels of the American national security apparatus.

The decision had been made. The intelligence was being constructed to justify it.

4.2 The Statistical Scale of the Deception

President George W. Bush and seven of his administration’s top officials made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. On at least 532 separate occasions, Bush and these officials stated unequivocally that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them.

President Bush made 232 false statements about weapons of mass destruction and 28 false statements about Iraq’s links to al-Qaeda. Secretary of State Powell had the second-highest total, with 244 false statements about WMDs and 10 about al-Qaeda links. Rumsfeld and Fleischer each made 109 false statements, followed by Wolfowitz with 85, Rice with 56, and Cheney with 48.

These were made, beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaeda.

This was the conclusion of numerous bipartisan government investigations, including those by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the 9/11 Commission, and the multinational Iraq Survey Group, whose Duelfer Report established that Saddam Hussein had terminated Iraq’s nuclear program in 1991 and made little effort to restart it.

4.3 Constructing the Nuclear Threat: Aluminum Tubes and Niger Uranium

The nuclear component of the WMD case rested on two principal claims: that Iraq had sought to purchase aluminum tubes for uranium enrichment centrifuges, and that Iraq had attempted to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger.

The IAEA’s Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei said Iraq was probably using the aluminum tubes for rocket production and that it was “highly unlikely” they could have been used for centrifuges. ElBaradei also said in March 2003 that the documents providing the basis for the uranium claim were forgeries. Both claims were debunked before the war. The administration cited them anyway.

The Niger forgeries deserve particular attention. They were crude enough that IAEA analysts identified them as fraudulent within weeks of receiving them through basic document verification. Yet they traveled through Italian intelligence channels into official American assessments, were referenced in the President’s State of the Union address, and were defended by administration officials even after the forgery was established. When Ambassador Joseph Wilson publicly confirmed his Niger findings contradicted the administration’s claims, his CIA officer wife was outed in what was a clear act of retaliation and a federal crime for which Scooter Libby was eventually convicted, and subsequently pardoned.

4.4 Curveball and the Manufacture of Human Intelligence

The U.S. government’s belief that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons was based on intelligence the CIA argued could not be trusted. The CIA was overruled as the administration sought outside information from Ahmed Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress.

The most consequential single intelligence source was Curveball, Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, whose claims about mobile biological weapons laboratories formed a centerpiece of Colin Powell’s February 2003 UN presentation.

German intelligence, which controlled Curveball as a source, repeatedly warned American counterparts that he was unreliable and his claims unverifiable. These warnings were suppressed or dismissed. Curveball later confessed he had fabricated his testimony.

The INC under Ahmed Chalabi was itself a disinformation factory. A Pentagon-funded exile organization with a direct financial interest in regime change, it fed fabricated intelligence about WMDs and al-Qaeda links into the American intelligence system. This intelligence was then cited by administration officials as confirmation of claims the INC had originally invented. a closed loop of manufactured certainty.

4.5 The Office of Special Plans: Bypassing the Truth

To circumvent the skepticism of career CIA and DIA analysts, the administration created the Office of Special Plans within the Pentagon, operating under Douglas Feith and Paul Wolfowitz. The OSP’s purpose was to mine raw, unvetted intelligence for anything that could be used to support the desired conclusions, then route this material directly to senior policymakers without the filtering and verification processes the intelligence community existed to provide.

The Pentagon had quietly recruited and coached 75 retired military officers to serve as “independent” paid consultants and television and radio analysts.

This military analyst program, exposed by the New York Times in 2008, placed administration-coached commentators on every major network while presenting them as independent expert voices. The public was being advised by people secretly coordinating their messaging with the Pentagon.

4.6 Manufacturing Public Consent: WHIG and the Rendon Group

The White House Iraq Group (WHIG) was established in August 2002 as a dedicated war-marketing operation. Staffed by Karl Rove, Condoleezza Rice, Karen Hughes, and Scooter Libby, it coordinated the rollout of the case for war, timing announcements for maximum media impact, placing stories with sympathetic journalists, and generating the “mushroom cloud” rhetoric that became the administration’s most effective emotional instrument.

The private contractor dimension was equally significant. The Rendon Group a Washington PR firm with deep intelligence community ties managed messaging for the Iraqi National Congress and helped shape the broader information environment in which the public deliberated. The privatization of the propaganda function allowed the administration to deny coordination while benefiting from a professionally managed campaign.

4.7 The Press as Transmission Belt

The full extent of deference to power and self-censorship by the major news media during the run-up to war is still not fully known.

The New York Times, through reporter Judith Miller, published front-page stories sourced primarily from the INC that drove the public WMD narrative. These stories were then cited by administration officials on Sunday morning programs. A feedback loop between a credulous or complicit press and a deceptive government.

The honorable exceptions were few. Knight Ridder’s Washington bureau, reporters Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay who consistently and accurately challenged the WMD claims before the invasion. Their work was largely ignored by the elite press. Walter Pincus at the Washington Post wrote skeptical pieces that were buried in interior pages by editors who preferred the administration’s version. The asymmetry between the prominence of official claims and the marginalization of accurate reporting was not incidental. It was the predictable output of a media system structurally dependent on official access.

V. The Invasion and Its Immediate Consequences: The Chaos Dividend

The second implemented sweeping de-Baathification, purging anyone associated with Saddam’s party from public employment which in practice meant firing a large proportion of Iraq’s teachers, doctors, engineers, civil servants, and administrators.

These men became the backbone of a growing insurgency. In the chaotic and sectarian environment of post-invasion Iraq, a brutal al-Qaeda affiliate flourished under the leadership of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. U.S.-run prisons like Camp Bucca acted as “jihadi universities,” where future ISIS leaders, including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, networked and radicalized.

The de-Baathification policy was not an unforeseen consequence.

The Army’s own planners, the State Department’s Future of Iraq project, and General Eric Shinseki had all warned before the invasion that post-conflict stabilization would require hundreds of thousands of troops and years of sustained governance support. Shinseki was publicly humiliated for these estimates. The warnings were ignored because a long, costly occupation contradicted the administration’s narrative of a quick, liberating war.

5.2 The Sectarian Implosion

While tensions between Iraq’s Sunni and Shia Muslim communities existed before 2003, Saddam Hussein’s secular Baathist regime had brutally suppressed any form of sectarian political identity. The U.S.-led invasion and the subsequent political process changed everything. The new political system, organized along ethnic and sectarian lines, transformed religious identity into the primary currency of power.

The ensuing violence was stoked by small but powerful, ultra-violent militias and terror groups on both sides, often with foreign backing. Many of these armed groups were tied to political parties. Meanwhile, the Iraqi army and police were either too weak to keep order, or complicit in the killings.

The bombing of the al-Askari shrine in Samarra in February 2006, one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites, tipped Iraq into a full-scale sectarian civil war. Thousands of Iraqis were killed in retaliatory cycles of ethnic cleansing, displacement, and assassination that continued for years. By the time the violence was partially suppressed by the 2007 surge, Iraq had been fundamentally transformed: a fragmented, traumatized society with shattered institutions and deep wells of sectarian grievance that would fuel further violence for decades.

5.3 The Birth of ISIS

The third phase of post-invasion instability played out between 2012 and 2017, as the government of Iraq did not follow through on promises to employ and pay the minority Sunnis who had fought the jihadis. Thousands of Sunnis were detained. By early 2013, tens of thousands participated in anti-government protests. The Shia-dominated government’s failure to follow through allowed the Islamic State in Iraq to reconstitute. The underground movement recruited thousands of Sunnis. In 2013, it expanded into Syria and rebranded as ISIS. By June 2014, ISIS took control of a third of the country.

This trajectory was the direct output of a series of deliberate decisions:

• the decision to invade based on false intelligence

• the decision to dissolve the Iraqi army

• the decision to implement de-Baathification

• the decision to build a sectarian political system

• the decision to withdraw in 2011 without a stabilizing follow-on force

• the decision of Prime Minister Maliki to govern through sectarian exclusion rather than national reconciliation.

Each of these decisions was made by human beings with agency, many of whom faced no accountability for the consequences.

The rise of ISIS also triggered a new foreign intervention. Iran was the first to provide military assistance, partly because Sunni jihadis came within 25 miles of its border. In September 2014, the United States formed a coalition of 79 countries and institutions to counter ISIS. The United States found itself fighting a terrorist organization whose existence was a direct consequence of its own illegal and dishonestly prosecuted invasion — and doing so in partial alliance with an Iran whose regional influence had been enormously amplified by the same invasion.

VI. The Decade of Aftermath: Iran’s Strategic Windfall

6.1 The Unintended Beneficiary

No actor benefited more from the 2003 invasion than Iran. Saddam Hussein’s Iraq had been Iran’s most dangerous regional adversary. the country that had fought it to a bloody standstill in an eight-year war costing approximately one million lives. With Saddam gone and Iraq now governed by a Shia-majority government with close ties to Tehran, the strategic balance of the Middle East shifted fundamentally in Iran’s favor.

The U.S.-led invasion and occupation triggered deeper Iranian intervention. Tehran successfully applied its Hezbollah model in Iraq by supporting Shia armed groups, some of which began participating in Iraqi politics. Some groups also became useful in Iran’s campaign to support the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

The neoconservative architects of the Iraq War, many of whom had Iran as their actual strategic target, achieved the precise opposite of their stated objective. By eliminating the one regional power that balanced Iran militarily, they handed Tehran a strategic windfall that transformed it from a regional challenger into a regional hegemon, with proxy forces extending from Lebanon and Syria through Iraq into Yemen. The Axis of Resistance that would later become the central preoccupation of American and Israeli military planning was, in significant part, a creation of the 2003 Iraq War.

6.2 The Human Ledger

Any honest accounting of the Iraq War must include the human cost. Numbers that are rarely cited alongside the abstract policy debates. Estimates of Iraqi civilian deaths range from the Iraq Body Count’s conservative figure of over 185,000 to the Lancet study’s estimate of 650,000 excess deaths in the first three years alone. Millions were internally displaced. The refugee crisis fundamentally destabilized neighboring Jordan and Syria. Iraq’s ancient Christian community, one of the oldest in the world, was effectively destroyed, its members fleeing a country they had inhabited since the first century. The cultural patrimony of one of humanity’s oldest civilizations was looted from the National Museum of Iraq in the days after the invasion, while American forces stood by under orders not to protect civilian infrastructure.

Over 4,400 American troops were killed. Hundreds of thousands returned with traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, and physical wounds whose treatment continues to cost billions annually and whose moral weight falls primarily on the soldiers and their families rather than on those who sent them based on fabricated intelligence.

VII. Accountability and Its Comprehensive Absence

7.1 The Perpetrators’ Careers

The systematic absence of accountability for the Iraq War deception is not a failure of the system. It is the system operating as designed when it comes to elite conduct in matters of national security. Those who made 935 false statements, manufactured the Curveball intelligence, created the Office of Special Plans, outed a CIA officer, and sent American soldiers to die for fabricated reasons have, without exception, avoided legal consequences.

Dick Cheney who was the administration’s most aggressive advocate for war and the official most directly connected to the intelligence manipulation through the OSP, retired to write a memoir defending his decisions. Paul Wolfowitz became president of the World Bank. Douglas Feith became a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School. Condoleezza Rice became a Stanford professor and board member of major corporations. Donald Rumsfeld died in 2021 without facing any legal process. Scooter Libby, the one official convicted of a crime, perjury in the Valerie Plame case, was pardoned by President Trump in 2018.

Colin Powell, who delivered the most consequential single lie, his UN presentation had later said it was a “blot” on his record. He died in 2021. The New York Times, whose coverage drove the public WMD narrative, published a partial mea culpa acknowledging that its reporting “was not as rigorous as it should have been.” No reporter or editor faced professional consequences of any significance.

7.2 The Structural Immunity of Power

This absence of accountability reflects a settled, bipartisan institutional norm in that executive conduct in matters of war and national security exists in a different legal universe from ordinary conduct. The Authorization for Use of Military Force, once granted by Congress on the basis of fraudulent intelligence, cannot be legally clawed back. No criminal statute clearly reaches the deliberate manipulation of intelligence to mislead Congress into authorizing war. The classified nature of much of the relevant evidence insulates decision-makers from scrutiny. And the political class, including the Democratic Party, which largely voted for the war based on the administration’s lies, has powerful institutional incentives not to establish precedents for prosecuting executive war deception.

The result is a moral hazard with civilizational implications: lying a country into war carries no cost for those who do it, which means the next administration faces no structural disincentive to do it again.

VIII. The Iran War: History Rhymes, Then Repeats

8.1 The Structural Parallel

In January 2003, President George W. Bush stood before Congress to warn of a “grave danger” from a “dictator,” a former U.S. client in the Middle East, armed with weapons of mass destruction. Twenty-three years later, in the same chamber, President Donald Trump used his State of the Union address to paint a strikingly similar narrative: a rogue regime, a looming nuclear threat, and a ticking clock.

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran. targeting military and government sites and assassinating several Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The surprise attacks were launched during negotiations between Iran and the U.S. regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

The Trump administration gave diverse and inconsistent explanations for starting the war:

• To forestall Iranian retaliation after an expected Israeli attack

• To stop an imminent Iranian threat

• To destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon

• To seize Iran’s oil resources, and to achieve regime change.

The multiplying, contradictory justifications are themselves a diagnostic indicator: when a government cannot settle on a single rationale, it is typically because no single honest rationale exists.

8.2 The Intelligence Contradiction

Here the 2026 case is, in a specific sense, more audacious than 2003. In the earlier case, intelligence was manipulated, suppressed, and selectively curated to produce an artificial consensus. In 2026, the intelligence assessments actually contradict Trump’s claims directly. While Trump asserted in his State of the Union address that Iran is “rebuilding” its nuclear program to strike the U.S. mainland, his own officials offer conflicting narratives.

A preliminary, low-confidence report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessed that Iran had moved much of its stockpile of enriched uranium before the U.S. strikes took place and that the strikes, which did not collapse the underground facilities, set back Iran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons by only a matter of months.

The general responsible for this assessment was fired. The CIA director then appeared to contradict it, claiming severe damage that would take years to rebuild.

The pattern is structurally identical to 2003: dissenting intelligence is suppressed, replaced by politically useful assessments from loyalist officials, while the president makes public claims that his own intelligence agencies do not support. The difference is that in 2026 this dynamic is happening in real time, visibly, with the underlying intelligence contradictions documented in the public record as the bombs are still falling.

8.3 Striking During Negotiations

The attacks were launched during negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Following the attack, nuclear talks were suspended indefinitely. This timing is of profound moral and strategic significance. It mirrors the Iraq pattern in which Hans Blix’s inspections were terminated not because they were failing to disarm Iraq but precisely because they were making progress, progress that threatened to remove the justification for war.

If diplomatic resolution was genuinely preferred, as the administration claimed, then launching strikes during active negotiations represents either an extraordinary failure of internal coordination or a deliberate choice to ensure that diplomacy could not succeed. The historical precedent from Iraq strongly suggests the latter.

8.4 The Regional Consequences Are Already Unfolding

Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping in response to the strikes, causing massive ripples in the global economy and threatening to undermine President Trump’s efforts to reduce U.S. inflation. The closure of a waterway through which roughly 20% of global oil trade passes is not a tactical inconvenience. It is a civilizational-scale economic event whose costs will be borne primarily by ordinary people in every country on earth. not by the officials who decided to launch strikes during negotiations.

The first week of Iran war operations cost more than $11.3 billion. In a country already debating the affordability of domestic social programs. The moral arithmetic here is not complicated, even if it is rarely stated plainly: the American government can find unlimited resources to bomb countries but cannot find equivalent resources to fund healthcare, infrastructure, or the care of veterans from its previous wars.

8.5 Echoes of Iraqgate: The Same Hypocrisy, the Same Actors

In a dark twist of historical irony, Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, who was armed to the teeth by the U.S. in Iraq’s 1980-1988 war with Iran, became Washington’s public enemy number one. Now that same label was seemingly applied to Iran’s Supreme Leader, a key leader during that ruinous war against Iraq that left a million dead.

The pattern is complete.

America armed Saddam to fight Iran. America then fought Saddam. America then fought the consequences of its war against Saddam. Including an Iran emboldened and expanded by the removal of its primary regional counterweight. America now fights Iran directly. At each stage, the justifications were presented as morally urgent and strategically necessary.

At each stage, the public record subsequently established that those justifications ranged from selective to fraudulent. At each stage, no one responsible for the lies faced meaningful accountability.

IX. Structural Analysis: Why This Keeps Happening

9.1 The Information Asymmetry of National Security

Democratic theory requires informed consent for war. But the executive branch, in matters of national security, possesses near-total control over the information environment. Classification gives it the power to share intelligence selectively with chosen audiences or to hide it entirely. Intelligence agencies are structurally dependent on executive patronage and therefore subject to politicization. Congressional oversight committees are bound by classification requirements that prevent them from publicly contradicting official claims even when they know those claims are false.

This structural asymmetry means that a determined executive, willing to exploit the national security prerogative dishonestly, faces almost no effective institutional check before a war begins. While, generally, I believe this to be the only time a check on power ACTUALLY matters i.e. Just War Theory. By the time the public record is filled in, through leaked documents, congressional investigations, and investigative journalism, the war is already underway, soldiers have already died, and the political conditions for accountability have already been foreclosed by partisan tribalism and the sunk-cost logic of ongoing military commitments.

9.2 The Neoconservative Project and Its Continuation

The 2003 Iraq War was the execution of a strategic vision that had been publicly articulated for years seen in the 1992 Defense Planning Guidance drafted by Wolfowitz and Zalmay Khalilzad; in the 1996 “Clean Break” document prepared for the Israeli government by Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and others; and in the 1997 Project for the New American Century documents signed by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and others calling for regime change in Iraq.

The neocons who hijacked policy under Bush have been weakened. But they have been replaced by figures who hold absolute loyalty to Trump and close ties to the Israeli right. Trump is driven by instinct, not strategy.

He seeks the “victory” that eluded his predecessors: the total hollowing out of Iran.

9.3 The Bipartisan Consensus on Empire

One of the most consequential and least acknowledged features of American military adventurism is its bipartisan character. The 2003 Iraq War was authorized by a Congress that included Democratic majorities in several respects; the authorization passed with significant Democratic support, including senators who would later claim they were deceived.

Barack Obama, who campaigned against the Iraq War, continued it, escalated drone warfare to unprecedented levels, and prosecuted more whistleblowers who exposed government misconduct than all previous presidents combined.

The Biden administration maintained the “maximum pressure” sanctions on Iran that directly contributed to the economic collapse preceding the 2026 war.

The war machine is not a Republican project or a Democratic project.

It is the project of an interlocking institutional complex. The Pentagon, the intelligence community, the defense industry, a significant faction of the think-tank and media ecosystem, and the bipartisan political class, whose organizational interests are served by permanent military engagement regardless of its stated rationale or actual results.

9.4 The Moral Hazard of Impunity

Every war conducted under false pretenses that produces no accountability for its architects makes the next false war more likely.

The Iraq War demonstrated that a sitting president could lie to Congress and the public, launch an illegal war of aggression, cause hundreds of thousands of deaths, and retire to paint portraits on a ranch in Texas. This outcome taught every subsequent administration a lesson far more durable than any anti-war speech: the costs of military deception fall on soldiers, on foreign civilians, on geopolitical stability and not on the people who ordered it.

Until this structural impunity is addressed through serious congressional war powers reform, through the development of legal mechanisms to hold executive officials accountable for deliberate intelligence manipulation, through a press culture that treats official war justifications with the sustained, institutional skepticism they deserve the pattern documented in this dissertation will continue. The names will change. The countries will change. The justifications will be recycled with modest modifications. The lies will continue.

PART II: The Israeli Dimension

How a Foreign Government Captured American Foreign Policy, Built a Nuclear Arsenal on Stolen American Materials, and Used the United States as Its Military Instrument Across the Middle East

I. The Elephant in Every Room

No serious account of American involvement in the Middle East can be written honestly without confronting the role of Israel and its domestic political infrastructure in shaping and in critical instances, fabricating, the rationale for American military intervention across the region.

This is not, as the mainstream has lead us to believe, a fringe position or conspiracy theory. It is the documented conclusion of mainstream scholars including John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt of the University of Chicago and Harvard Kennedy School respectively, of CIA founding officers, of retired American military commanders and diplomats, of Senate investigators, and of the declassified record itself.

What I will be presenting here in this section is not that Israel controls the United States through some invisible conspiratorial hand to a degree that is unmatched or omnipotent. The argument is more specific and more verifiable regarding the state of international world Jewry in: that over seven decades, the Israeli government and its domestic lobbying infrastructure have systematically manipulated American intelligence, bribed and coerced American legislators, conducted sustained espionage against the American government including the theft of nuclear weapons materials, written policy documents that were later implemented as American foreign policy, and used American military power to destroy or cripple every significant military threat to Israeli regional dominance. Including Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, and now Iran, with the United States providing the blood, treasure, and international political cover.

This section documents that record.

I. The Lobby: Architecture of Control

Origins and Evasion of the Law

AIPAC is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and was not born as an independent domestic advocacy organization. In the early 1960s, the Department of Justice ordered the American Zionist Council to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, concluding it was operating under the direction of Israel’s government.

Instead of complying, the organization was rebranded as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938 was passed for a specific purpose: to require any person or entity acting on behalf of a foreign government to publicly disclose that relationship. Lobbyists for Saudi Arabia register. Firms working for Turkey register. PR shops tied to Russia and China register. But AIPAC, arguably, the most powerful foreign-policy lobby in Washington does not. It has maintained this exemption for over six decades while growing into one of the most powerful political organizations in American history. Built from the beginning on a legal fiction that has never been seriously challenged by any administration of either party.

AIPAC was founded in 1954 by Isaiah L. Kenen, a lobbyist for the Israeli government, partly to counter international criticism of Israel’s Qibya massacre of Palestinian villagers that year. Its founding purpose was to insulate the Israeli government from the international consequences of its own violence, using American political infrastructure as the vehicle.

2.2 The Mechanical Capture of Congress

The scale of AIPAC’s congressional control is openly acknowledged by AIPAC itself and by its own former officials.

Former AIPAC director Morris Amitay stated bluntly that it was “almost politically suicidal for a member of Congress who wants to seek reelection to take any stand that might be interpreted as anti-policy of the conservative Israeli government.” An unnamed congressional staffer sympathetic to Israel told journalist Michael Massing that “We can count on well over half the House, 250 to 300 members, to do reflexively whatever AIPAC wants.” Former AIPAC official Steven Rosen illustrated AIPAC’s power for journalist Jeffrey Goldberg by placing a napkin in front of him and saying, “In twenty-four hours, we could have the signatures of seventy senators on this napkin.”

This is an open and honest description of a functional political mechanism that operates independently of public opinion, party affiliation, or American national interest. In the 2024 election cycle, the AIPAC PAC was the largest pro-Israel PAC in America and contributed more resources directly to candidates than any other PAC. Ninety-six percent of AIPAC-backed candidates won their general election races.

AIPAC “supports any candidate for Congress who is pro-Israel, and targets and punishes any candidate that is critical of Israel,” according to Walter Hixson, a retired distinguished professor of history and author.

“There’s nothing like AIPAC in American politics for any other country. It’s not only the most powerful lobby representing a foreign country; it’s one of the most powerful lobbies, period.”

AIPAC spent some $23 million to boost opponents of Democratic Congressmen Jamal Bowman and Corey Bush in their primaries, not because either man was corrupt or ineffective, but because both had been publicly critical of Israeli policy. This is the systematic use of foreign-aligned money to remove democratically elected American representatives from office for holding foreign policy positions that a foreign government dislikes.

AIPAC effectively narrows the range of perspectives represented in Congress and undermines key democratic institutions. The widening gap between public sentiment and congressional action reflects the influence a lobbying organization has over who is elected into office.

2.3 The FARA Evasion and Its Consequences

Under the Foreign Agent Registration Act of 1938, any person or entity of foreign principals who are engaged in political activities must disclose their relationship with the foreign principal to the Department of Justice.

The act’s outdated assumptions regarding foreign policy are not built to handle modern spheres of influence.

The collaboration between AIPAC and the Israeli state is documented as even journalists from The New Yorker and Haaretz have reported that AIPAC staff are in constant contact with officials at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, receiving briefings and aligning strategy before major congressional battles. AIPAC’s current chief executive, Howard Kohr, began his career working inside the Israeli Embassy itself. When the head of America’s most powerful lobby once drew his paycheck directly from a foreign government, the fiction of independence collapses.

2.4 Eliminating Dissent: The Findley and Helms Cases

Two cases illustrate the punitive mechanism with particular clarity.

Congressman Paul Findley of Illinois served in the House for 22 years. After developing a substantive critique of American Middle East policy and meeting with PLO chairman Yasser Arafat, he was used as an example by AIPAC for what happens to members who cross the organization. He was targeted with a sustained, AIPAC-organized campaign and defeated in 1982. He later wrote They Dare to Speak Out, documenting the lobby’s operations from the inside.

Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina was known throughout his career as a consistent opponent of all foreign aid. a position that brought him into direct conflict with AIPAC. AIPAC’s President Tom Dine had labeled Helms “the worst” in the Senate, and pro-Israel PACs under AIPAC’s direction donated $222,342 to North Carolina Governor Hunt, making that Senate race the most costly up to that point. Helms barely survived. Shortly afterward, he traveled to Israel with Jewish constituents and has since voted one hundred percent with AIPAC, even lobbying for the removal of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after the measure had failed.

This is financial coercion applied to sitting U.S. senators to change their votes on matters of American foreign policy in service of a foreign government’s preferences.

III. “A Clean Break”: When Israeli Policy Became American Policy

3.1 The Document

In 1996, a study group assembled for incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu produced a foreign policy document titled A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm. The study group was led by former United States Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle and included Douglas Feith, James Colbert, Charles Fairbanks Jr., Jonathan Torop, David Wurmser, and Meyrav Wurmser. These were not Israeli citizens writing for their own government. They were American citizens — several holding or soon to hold senior American national security positions — writing a strategic blueprint for a foreign government.

The document called for overthrowing the governments of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, abandoning the Oslo Accords in favor of aggressive preemptive military force, and moving to undermine the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

The document proposed regime change in Iraq primarily as a means of weakening, containing, and even rolling back Syria. Overthrowing Saddam in Iraq was merely a stepping stone to overthrowing Bashar al-Assad. As Pat Buchanan put it: “In the Perle-Feith-Wurmser strategy, Israel’s enemy remains Syria, but the road to Damascus runs through Baghdad.”

3.2 The American Implementation

The gap between 1996 and 2003 closed with remarkable speed once the appropriate personnel were in place. Brian Whitaker reported in The Guardian in September 2002 that “with several of the Clean Break paper’s authors now holding key positions in Washington, the plan for Israel to transcend its foes by reshaping the Middle East looks a good deal more achievable today than it did in 1996. Americans may even be persuaded to give up their lives to achieve it.”

They were. Richard Perle became chairman of the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee. Douglas Feith became Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. the third-highest civilian position in the Pentagon. David Wurmser became Middle East adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney. Feith’s Counter Terrorism Evaluation Group trawled through the CIA’s intelligence to stitch together conspiracy theories linking Saddam Hussein’s Iraq with al-Qaeda. Perle put the Group into contact with Ahmed Chalabi, a dodgy anti-Saddam exile who spun further disinformation. Much of the Group’s grunt work was performed by David Wurmser, the primary author of “A Clean Break.”

The major players of foreign policy, Perle, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Feith, Wurmser all have had dramatic success in shaping foreign policy to their conceptualization. The Middle East policies driving the American government’s Middle East policy are delineated in the document “A Clean Break” and are only partially congruent with the attitudes of the President. The authors of “A Clean Break” derive their concepts based on Israeli security and Israeli interest so that American foreign policy under the Bush administration is primarily serving the interest of Israel and secondarily that of the United States.

In March 2003, Patrick Buchanan assessed the outcome plainly: “Their plan, which urged Israel to re-establish ‘the principle of preemption,’ has now been imposed by Perle, Feith, Wurmser & Co. on the United States.”

3.3 The Haaaretz Warning

Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz columnist Akiva Eldar warned at the time that Feith and Perle “are walking a fine line between their loyalty to American governments and Israeli interests.” This was diplomatic understatement. The Clean Break document demonstrates that for these men, the line had been erased. They had written Israeli strategic policy, then moved into American government positions to implement it using American military power, American lives, and American money.

IV. The Espionage Record: Israel Spying on Its “Ally”

4.1 The Systematic Pattern

U.S. counterintelligence officials consistently rank Israeli espionage as among the most active on American soil, alongside larger countries such as France, China and Russia. In 1951, Mossad and the CIA agreed not to spy on each other. Nevertheless, there were strong indications of ongoing Israeli espionage against the United States, confirmed by the 1985 arrest of Jonathan Pollard, one of the most damaging security leaks in U.S. history.

The espionage record is a sustained, multi-decade campaign by Israeli intelligence services against the United States, running from the 1940s to the present, using American citizens as assets, American institutions as cover, and American credulity about the nature of the alliance as operational protection.

4.2 Jonathan Pollard: The Most Damaging Known Case

When Jonathan Pollard was convicted of espionage in 1987, he became the first American to go to jail for life for passing secrets to a U.S. ally. The top-secret information Pollard passed on to Israel is so vast and damaging, the complete list of files is itself top secret.

Among the most damaging intelligence Pollard provided was the 10-volume Radio and Signal Intelligence (RASIN) manual, detailing the entire U.S. global listening profile, what communications the National Security Agency was monitoring, from which countries, and what U.S. priorities were. Some of his disclosures are said to have ended up in the hands of the Soviet Union, which many believe were traded by Israel to the USSR in exchange for the continued emigration of Soviet Jewish citizens to Israel.

Then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, in his sentencing memorandum, stated that “it is difficult for me, even in the so-called ‘year of the spy,’ to conceive of a greater harm to national security than that caused by the defendant in view of the breadth, the critical importance to the U.S., and the high sensitivity of the information he sold to Israel.”

The same Israeli handler, scientific attaché Yosef Yagur, ran Pollard and Ben-Ami Kadish simultaneously in the 1980s. Kadish, an American engineer at the Army’s Picatinny Arsenal, admitted giving an Israeli agent classified manuals on U.S. missile defense systems, nuclear weapons design, and the F-15 fighter jet. Two simultaneous penetrations of American defense secrets by the same Israeli handler, running parallel spy operations inside the Pentagon and Army arsenals.

In 1995, Pollard was given Israeli citizenship. Benjamin Netanyahu, during the 1998 Wye River conference, attempted a coercive approach, saying “if we sign an agreement with Arafat, I expected a pardon for Pollard.” The Prime Minister of Israel used peace negotiations as leverage to demand the release of a man convicted of selling American national security secrets to Israel. This transaction, which failed,!illustrates the nature of the “alliance” with remarkable clarity.

Pollard was released in 2015, traveled immediately to Israel, and received a hero’s welcome.

4.3 The AIPAC Espionage Scandal: Pentagon Intelligence Routed to Tel Aviv

In May 2005, the Justice Department announced that Lawrence Anthony Franklin, a U.S. Air Force Reserves colonel working as a Department of Defense analyst in the office of Douglas Feith, had been arrested and charged by the FBI with providing classified national defense information to Israel. A six-count criminal complaint identified AIPAC by name and described a luncheon meeting in which Franklin disclosed top-secret information to two AIPAC officials.

Franklin pleaded guilty to providing information about a classified presidential directive and other sensitive information pertaining to U.S. deliberations on foreign policy regarding Iran to AIPAC, who in turn provided the information to Israel.

In April 2005, AIPAC policy director Steven Rosen and AIPAC senior Iran analyst Keith Weissman were fired by AIPAC amid the FBI investigation. They were later indicted for illegally conspiring to gather and disclose classified national security information to Israel. AIPAC agreed to pay their legal fees. All charges against Rosen and Weissman were eventually dropped in 2009 — reportedly because the government did not want to reveal classified information at trial. Franklin received a sentence ultimately reduced to ten months in a halfway house.

The pattern is consistent: Israeli espionage is discovered, partially prosecuted, then quietly buried for “diplomatic” reasons. The one American who goes to prison is the lowest-ranking participant. The AIPAC officials walk free. The Israeli recipients face no accountability whatsoever.

4.4 The NUMEC Affair: America’s Own Nuclear Materials Stolen for Dimona

Among the least-discussed and most consequential episodes in the history of the U.S.-Israel relationship is the NUMEC affair the probable theft of American weapons-grade uranium that helped give Israel its nuclear arsenal.

Researchers and former U.S. nuclear officials contended there was abundant evidence available from declassified documents to support suspicions that at least some of the 337 kilograms of radioactive materials that went missing from NUMEC in the 1960s, from the plant in Apollo, Pennsylvania, had been stolen and taken to the nuclear research reactor in Dimona, Israel.

In April 1968, CIA Director Richard Helms asked the Attorney General to undertake a discrete investigation of NUMEC’s founder Zalman Shapiro in light of new evidence including environmental samples taken in Israel that detected uniquely enriched uranium near Dimona. FBI and AEC documents describe a September 1968 visit to the NUMEC plant by four Israeli citizens known to be affiliated with Israeli intelligence.

One of those four Israelis was Rafi Eitan, the same intelligence operative who would later run the Jonathan Pollard spy ring, organize the capture of Adolf Eichmann, and later sit in the Israeli Knesset. His presence at a Pennsylvania nuclear facility in 1968, at the moment 337 kilograms of highly enriched uranium went missing, is not a coincidence that the public record has ever satisfactorily explained.

Carter was determined to broker a peace deal between Israel and Egypt. The last thing he wanted were revelations confirming Israel had nuclear weapons, particularly if they had been created with materials from the U.S., so Carter shut down the NUMEC investigation. The American President shut down an investigation into nuclear theft by a foreign country from American soil because holding that country accountable would have been politically inconvenient. The pattern of immunity, established in 1968, repeated in 1985 with Pollard, repeated in 2005 with AIPAC, repeated at every subsequent juncture was set in this moment.

4.5 Project Pinto: Hollywood, Nuclear Triggers, and Netanyahu

The most operationally sophisticated Israeli intelligence operation against American nuclear security was Project Pinto. conducted by Arnon Milchan, a Hollywood producer who became one of the most celebrated figures in the American entertainment industry, and his network of front companies.

Between 1979 and 1983, approximately 800 krytrons, high-speed electronic switches capable of triggering nuclear weapons. These disappeared from the United States and materialized in Israel. Richard Kelly Smyth, a California aerospace engineer and NATO consultant with high-level security clearance, incorporated MILCO International Inc. in 1972 at Milchan’s suggestion. MILCO purchased krytrons from defense contractor EG&G, falsely declaring them as harmless “pentodes” or radio tubes on export documents. The devices traveled to Heli Trading Company in Tel Aviv, also owned by Milchan, which forwarded them to Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

Milchan was a full-fledged operative for Israel’s top-secret intelligence agency LAKAM, established Hollywood as cover, and set up front companies to bypass restrictions on the transfer of military and nuclear weapons-related products to Israel.

The Netanyahu connection is documented in declassified FBI materials. During trips to Israel in the early 1980s, Smyth met regularly with Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the FBI memorandum, Smyth and Netanyahu would meet in restaurants in Tel Aviv and in Netanyahu’s home. Netanyahu worked at Heli Trading Company. Milchan’s Israeli node of the smuggling network.

The man who would go on to serve as the primary advocate for American military action against Iran’s nuclear program. Appearing before Congress, giving speeches claiming Iran was months from a bomb, meeting presidents and prime ministers to press the case for preemptive military strikes — had himself, as a young diplomat, worked directly inside a covert network smuggling nuclear weapons triggers out of the United States.

Milchan was never charged. Netanyahu then-acting as Israel’s ambassador to Washington pulled strings with the Reagan administration, and a deal was reached whereby Smyth’s case was managed quietly. Smyth eventually pleaded guilty to export violations. Milchan continued producing films. Netanyahu continued his political career. The 800 nuclear triggers that left American soil have never been recovered.

V. The USS Liberty: When Israel Attacked America and America Covered It Up

The USS Liberty incident of June 8, 1967 stands as the most unambiguous single demonstration of both Israeli willingness to attack American assets when strategically convenient and American government willingness to suppress that reality to protect the bilateral relationship.

The attack killed 34 crew members, wounded 171, I, a few years back had an opportunity to speak to the survivors myself.

They severely damaged the ship. Both the Israeli and United States governments conducted inquiries that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship’s identity.

The senior legal counsel to the Navy’s original inquiry did not agree with that conclusion and said so on the record decades later. Retired Captain Ward Boston stated in a sworn affidavit that Johnson and McNamara told those heading the Navy’s inquiry to “conclude that the attack was a case of ‘mistaken identity’ despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.”

When word of the attack reached Washington, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the twelve F-4 Phantom jets dispatched from the carrier Saratoga to defend the Liberty recalled to the carrier. They never reached the Liberty. The reason for the recall remains officially unclear.

It did not remain unclear to the carrier division commander. Admiral Lawrence Geis told a colleague, who later testified to this account, that when he challenged McNamara’s second recall of rescue aircraft, President Johnson himself came on the phone and stated that he “didn’t give a damn if the ship sinks and all the Americans are killed. I will not embarrass my ally.”

Survivors were explicitly ordered not to talk about the attack to anyone, including family members, and faced threats of court-martial if they did. After returning home, the Navy scattered the crew members, ensuring no two were posted together.

The medal awarded to Captain McGonagle for his valor in saving the ship, the Congressional Medal of Honor, was presented not at the White House as was customary, but in a quiet ceremony at the Washington Naval Yard, without publicity and without the President. The United States government managed the cover-up of an attack on an American vessel so thoroughly that the Liberty’s crew was scattered, silenced, and its commander honored in private — all to protect a relationship with the country that had just killed 34 American sailors.

VI. The Propaganda Architecture: Manufacturing American Public Opinion for Israeli Wars

6.1 The Industrial Scale of Pro-Israel Media Operations

The manipulation of American public opinion on behalf of Israeli foreign policy interests operates at industrial scale through multiple overlapping mechanisms: think tanks, media organizations, philanthropic foundations, evangelical Christian organizations, and the institutional relationships between American Jewish communal organizations and mainstream media.

American journalist Michael Massing argues that there is a fundamental lack of media coverage of the Israel lobby. “AIPAC’s power makes potential sources reluctant to discuss the organization on the record, and employees who leave it usually sign pledges of silence. AIPAC officials themselves rarely give interviews, and the organization even resists divulging its board of directors.” Journalists, meanwhile, are often reluctant to write about the influence of organized Jewry.

This is a structural chilling effect produced by the knowledge, documented in the cases of Findley, Bush, Bowman, and dozens of others that public criticism of Israeli policy produces organized, well-funded retaliation against careers. The same mechanism that operates on congressmen operates on journalists and editors, producing a systematic bias in coverage not through active direction but through institutional risk aversion.

6.2 Christians United for Israel: The Evangelical Flank

The largest American pro-Israel lobbying group is Christians United for Israel (CUFI), which has over seven million members. This is not a Jewish organization. It is an evangelical Christian organization whose theological premillenialism. the belief that the gathering of Jews in Israel is a precondition for the Second Coming of Christ, produces a mass political base for Israeli foreign policy preferences among the American religious right.

The strategic value of CUFI to Israel is substantial. It provides political legitimacy, the alliance is to serve the global Jewish interest by disguising itself as a broadly American Christian support group. It provides a mass membership base that generates congressional contact on Israeli policy issues that dwarfs what AIPAC could produce alone.

American evangelical Christians are, in effect, a domestic political force whose theology has been leveraged into a de facto instrument of Israeli foreign policy.

6.3 The Think Tank-to-Government Pipeline

The neoconservative think tank ecosystem such as the American Enterprise Institute, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, the Hudson Institute, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, functions as both ideological production infrastructure and personnel pipeline. 9/11 paved the way for realizing the Clean Break agenda, using the United States as a gigantic proxy, thanks to the Israel lobby’s massive influence in Congress and the neocons’ newly won dominance in the Bush Administration.

The revolving door between these organizations, the Israeli government, and American national security positions is not incidental. It is the mechanism by which Israeli strategic priorities are translated into American policy without ever appearing on a FARA registration form. An analyst at AEI who has consulted for the Israeli government, who later joins the National Security Council, who later returns to AEI, has never been a registered foreign agent and yet the Israeli government’s strategic preferences have traveled through that career in both directions.

VII. The Target List: Every Arab Enemy, Taken Down in Turn

7.1 The Strategic Logic

The Clean Break document identified the target list explicitly: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and the Palestinian Authority.

What has happened to each of these in the twenty years since the document was written tracks its prescriptions with remarkable fidelity because Israeli-aligned officials occupied the key positions in American government at the decisive moments, and because the lobby ensured that no congressional opposition could mount the institutional resistance to stop what was happening.

Iraq was invaded in 2003 on false pretenses generated substantially by an intelligence apparatus populated by Clean Break authors. Saddam Hussein, Iraq’s military capacity, its conventional deterrent against Israel, was eliminated. Israel has not faced a conventional Iraqi military threat since.

Lebanon was struck by Israel in 2006 in a war that Phyllis Bennis and others noted tracked Clean Break’s prescriptions for “striking Syrian military targets in Lebanon, and should that prove insufficient, striking at select targets in Syria proper.” American diplomatic cover during the 2006 Lebanon War the then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice famously called the destruction of Lebanon’s civilian infrastructure the “birth pangs of a new Middle East”, was total and unconditional.

Syria spent a decade of civil war beginning in 2011 that served the same function as regime change: the state has been shattered, its military capacity degraded, its territory fragmented, and Israel now operates over Syrian airspace with near-total impunity, striking Iranian targets at will.

The result is a strategic corridor: Israeli aircraft now operate over Syrian airspace with near impunity, enabling direct strikes on Iranian targets. Lebanon, too, has been drawn into this orbit of instability.

Libya was destroyed in 2011 through a NATO intervention in which neoconservative advocates, many with the same think tank affiliations as the Clean Break authors who played key roles in the policy debate. Muammar Gaddafi, who had long since abandoned his weapons programs, was removed from power. Libya has not had a functioning government since.

Palestine requires no American military intervention because Israel manages its elimination directly, with American weapons, American diplomatic cover at the United Nations, and American veto power exercised dozens of times to block Security Council resolutions condemning Israeli conduct. The United States has vetoed dozens of Security Council resolutions critical of Israel and has reportedly helped to protect the country’s nuclear arsenal.

Iran is the final target and is identified as such in Clean Break, pursued through the same combination of fabricated intelligence, lobby pressure, neoconservative advocacy, and American political vulnerability that produced the Iraq War. The 2026 strikes represent the culmination of a strategic project that was publicly articulated in 1996 and has been advanced through every subsequent administration.

7.2 The Nuclear Double Standard

Israel possesses an estimated 80 to 400 nuclear warheads. It has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It does not submit to International Atomic Energy Agency inspections. It maintains a policy of “nuclear ambiguity” neither confirming nor denying its arsenal and that is enforced by the American government, which has publicly agreed not to press Israel on the matter.

Seymour Hersh’s work reveals a double standard: where allies like Israel are permitted to possess nuclear weapons in silence, and adversaries like Iran are demonized without credible evidence of weaponization.

That arsenal was built substantially through espionage against the United States: the probable diversion of 337 kilograms of weapons-grade uranium from NUMEC in Pennsylvania; the theft of 800 nuclear weapon triggers through Project Pinto; the intelligence gathered by Pollard on Arab and Pakistani nuclear programs that allowed Israel to calibrate its own deterrent; and the broader network of covert procurement operations that Israeli intelligence ran through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s across the American defense industrial base.

The country that stole American nuclear materials to build its own undeclared nuclear arsenal now demands, through its lobby, through its officials’ appearances before Congress, through the network of think tanks and media operations it cultivates that the United States go to war to prevent other countries in the region from acquiring nuclear weapons. The argument that Iran must not be permitted to develop a nuclear capability is made with particular force by the officials of a country that developed its nuclear capability through theft from the United States and has never submitted to international inspection.

This is the foundational hypocrisy of American Middle East policy, enforced by the lobby and invisible in mainstream American political discourse.

VIII. The Dual Loyalty Question: Structure, Not Slur

The question of “dual loyalty” is routinely dismissed as antisemitic or at least conspiratorial whenever it is raised. This dismissal performs a specific political function: it converts a legitimate structural question about conflicts of interest in government service into a question about the character of the person raising it, thereby foreclosing the inquiry.

The question is legitimate and important. It is about the documented fact that specific individuals like Perle, Feith, Wolfowitz, Wurmser all simultaneously held positions in the American national security apparatus and had deep personal, ideological, and in some cases financial connections to the Israeli government and to Israeli strategic objectives. It is about the documented fact that these individuals wrote policy documents for the Israeli government and then implemented substantially the same policies from American government positions.

The Dual Citizenship Disclosure Act was introduced in the 118th Congress precisely because there is no current legal requirement for members of Congress who hold foreign citizenship to disclose that status. The bill has not passed.

There is no public registry of American government officials who hold Israeli citizenship. There is no requirement to disclose.

What is verifiable, and has been verified, is not about citizenship. It is about documented behavior where officials who wrote foreign policy for Israel and then implemented it from American positions; a lobbying organization that was founded by a registered agent of Israel and never registered under FARA; an espionage record spanning seven decades; a systematic pattern of domestic political punishment for any American official who dissents from Israeli strategic preferences. These are structural conflicts of interest. They can be documented without reference to ethnicity or religion. And they have been almost entirely insulated from public accountability by the very mechanisms the labeling of criticism as antisemitism, the lobby’s control over congressional careers, the institutional silence of a press that understands the professional cost of coverage that this section documents.

IX. Mearsheimer, Walt, and the Price of Saying the Obvious

In 2006, John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of the Harvard Kennedy School published a paper in the London Review of Books titled “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.” It argued, with extensive documentation, that the Israel lobby had pushed the United States into a war in Iraq that served Israeli strategic interests rather than American ones, and that the lobby’s influence systematically distorted American foreign policy in ways that were neither in America’s interest nor, ultimately, in Israel’s long-term interest.

The response was a coordinated campaign to destroy both men’s professional reputations. They were called antisemites. Their scholarly credentials were attacked. They were effectively frozen out of mainstream foreign policy discourse for years. Their book that was published in 2007, meticulously sourced, drawing on the public record and was treated by the American foreign policy establishment as a form of hate speech rather than a work of political science.

Mearsheimer and Walt argued bluntly that AIPAC was “a de facto agent for a foreign government” and that it “manipulates American foreign policy in ways that are not always in the United States’ national interest.” Their research traced how U.S. support for Israel could not be explained by strategic necessity or shared values alone. it was explained by AIPAC’s unmatched power to intimidate, reward, and punish.

The reaction to their work was itself the most powerful demonstration of its thesis. The most effective way to suppress discussion of a lobby’s power is to ensure that anyone who discusses it faces professional destruction. That is what happened. That is what the lobby’s power makes possible.

The Cost

The arrangement between Israel and the United States in which American military power, diplomatic cover, intelligence resources, and financial aid are placed substantially at Israel’s strategic disposal, has produced a specific and calculable set of costs.

• It has produced the Iraq War, whose architects wrote the strategic rationale for the Israeli government six years before implementing it in Washington.

• It has produced hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis, thousands of dead Americans, and a regional power vacuum that spawned ISIS.

• It has produced the current war against Iran, launched during diplomatic negotiations, justified by intelligence that contradicts the administration’s own assessments, and structured to serve Israeli regional interests in ways that diverge materially from American ones.

• It has produced a foreign policy in which the United States vetoes UN resolutions, supplies weapons, provides diplomatic cover, and sacrifices its relationships with the Arab world, for a country with fewer people than New York City, an undeclared nuclear arsenal built substantially from stolen American materials

• It produced a lobby that has proven willing to engage in espionage against the country it claims as its closest ally.

• Since the end of World War II, the United States has given vastly more aid to Israel than to any other country. U.S. aid to Israel over successive ten-year periods has increased from $26.7 billion starting in 1999 to $30 billion starting in 2009 to $38 billion starting in 2019. In 2023, an additional $14 billion in military aid was granted. This is aid to a country whose per capita GDP places it among the wealthiest nations on earth, whose military is nuclear-armed, and whose intelligence services have repeatedly stolen American secrets.

The arrangement here is not an alliance in any normal sense of the term. An alliance involves reciprocity, shared interests, and mutual respect for sovereignty. What the historical record documents is a client relationship in which the United States is the client and one whose politicians are systematically targeted for electoral destruction if they express independent judgment, whose intelligence agencies are penetrated and looted, whose military is deployed to eliminate the client’s enemies, and whose public is managed by a propaganda apparatus so thoroughly embedded in American institutional life that the arrangement itself cannot be publicly named without professional consequence.

That is the honest description of what the record shows.

It does not require a conspiracy theory.

It requires only reading the documents.

This dissertation is current as of April 2026. The Iran war is ongoing. The ceasefire announced April 7, 2026 remains fragile. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. No individual responsible for the decisions documented here has faced legal accountability. This footnote may serve as both conclusion and epitaph.

There is a particular kind of political betrayal that is worse than simple dishonesty.

It is the betrayal performed by a man who tells his followers exactly what they want to hear, in precise terms, with theatrical conviction, and then, once in power, he delivers either a pale counterfeit, a bureaucratic delay, or nothing at all while pointing aggressively in the other direction.

Donald Trump’s second term has been a masterclass in this specific genre of political failure. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that his base who are among the most intensely loyal constituency in modern American political history, has largely been conditioned to accept the performance as the substance.

This dissertation examines the gap between Trump’s campaign promises and the realities of his second term across several domains:

Border security and the wall, mass deportation, the Epstein files, the January 6 pardons, the cost of living, foreign entanglements, the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the attempted assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the violent anti-ICE riots that exposed the hollow core of his strongman rhetoric.

These are systematic filures and a pattern that reveals either profound incompetence at the machinery of governance, or a calculated understanding that the promise itself is the product, and delivery is beside the point.

I. The Wall: Thirty Miles of Scar Tissue on a Two-Thousand-Mile Border

No promise in modern American political history has been more theatrically central to a political movement than the border wall.

From the moment it was floated as a campaign device by Roger Stone and Sam Nunberg in 2015 that was explicitly designed as a memorable talking point to connect Trump’s developer image to immigration policy. “Build The Wall” became the chant that defined MAGA. Mexico would pay for it. It would be finished. It would be beautiful. Trump would build it because building things is what HE does. Unlike all the others taking up space in the D.C. Swamp.

In his first term, Trump built approximately 452 miles of barrier. The vast majority of which replaced outdated or dilapidated existing barriers rather than covering new ground.

In his second term, returning to the White House on January 20, 2025, he declared a national emergency and vowed to finish the job.

Fifteen months later, only 30 miles of border barriers have been started and completed since the beginning of Trump’s second term. That is 30 miles on a 1,954-mile border. To put this in perspective, as of mid-December 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol was averaging two miles of wall installed per week. This was a pace the agency itself promised to accelerate to ten miles per week. CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott told Congress the effort is “ahead of schedule and below budget,” while his own figures show progress closer to about 3.5 miles per week  since early February. The math does not survive this inspection.

The root causes of the delays are bureaucratic and contractual. Contracts for about 200 miles of border wall barriers had been awarded and were awaiting Noem’s signature, held up inside the DHS review process. The majority of the border wall structure, 1,168 miles, is still in the planning stage. Congress did eventually fund the project with the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” which included billions for Smart Wall construction, and as of January 2026, CBP had awarded contracts for 587 miles of border barrier. BUT awarding contracts is not building a wall. And a wall under contract in 2026 is not a wall that exists. CBP anticipates completing 250 miles of new barriers by September 30, 2026. Which is itself a dramatically diminished goal relative to the original promise of a complete wall. The Trump administration hopes to complete the border wall by 2029. The final year of Trump’s second term, giving it maximum opportunity to remain perpetually “in progress” as a political asset he can rattle off during his incoherent masterbation he partakes in every time he speaks publicly these days.

What is genuinely true is that daily encounters on the border declined by 95 percent. With southwest border apprehensions averaging approximately 250 per day compared to more than 5,100 per day previously.

The border has, by encounter metrics, genuinely quieted. The administration achieved this primarily through policy changes like, ending catch-and-release, reinstating Remain in Mexico, eliminating CBP One but not through construction. The wall, as promised, as chanted, as the centerpiece of ten years of political messaging, remains largely aspirational. What exists is a project or a plan, that is certainly only a political myth that will outlive the structure itself. This is a fact.

II. Mass Deportation: The Numbers Behind the Theater

“The largest deportation operation in American history.”

Trump said this.

He said it again.

He said it at every rally.

His base received it as a covenant.

While the reality from the data available is a performance of enforcement layered over statistics that the administration has every incentive to obscure.

DHS said in a December 2025 press release that 605,000 people had been deported since January 20, 2025, but the lack of public data makes it impossible to know what that figure includes. 

Crucially, 80% of the administration’s claimed total of 2 million “removed or self-deported” is on the “self-deported” side, based on government survey data that experts warn should be viewed with skepticism. 

Even Trump supporter and Oversight Project president Mike Howell called these “funny numbers,” stating that “what matters are ICE removals and deportations, way more than these other funny numbers.” 

The independent data is unflattering. MPI believes the Trump administration’s pace of deportations in 2025 could lead to only about 500,000 immigrants being removed which is far below the president’s 1 million goal and even below the Biden administration, which deported 685,000 migrants in fiscal year 2024.

The administration announced in an April 2025 press release that its arrests and deportations had “already surpassed the entirety of Fiscal Year 2024,” but Biden’s actual FY 2024 record of 272,000 removals was over twice the administration’s claimed 100-day number. 

Keep in mind that the administration genuinely increased enforcement presence, dismantled catch-and-release, and deployed military assets in support of immigration operations. But the number of people in the U.S. without any legal status has almost certainly increased since January 2025,  because the administration reclassified hundreds of thousands of people with legal status. Including CHNV parolees and TPS holders who had followed proper processes, as “illegal,” thereby inflating both the target population and the apparent scale of the problem it is claiming to solve.

The show of force is undeniable. Its actual results relative to its stated ambitions. mass deportation, millions removed, a historic purge, are, simply, not.

The administration deployed masked federal agents, military assets, and unprecedented rhetoric. Calling protesters insurrectionists, threatening martial law, invoking the specter of the Alien Enemies Act while simultaneously failing to follow through with the decisive, overwhelming action that alone could have justified the escalation.

The result is the worst possible outcome: all of the political and legal blowback of authoritarianism, with none of its functional achievements.

When a government acts with genuine, sustained, overwhelming force, it either succeeds and the resistance collapses, or it fails and the resistance is discredited by its own inability to stop the juggernaut. What it does not do is radicalize the opposition further while leaving that opposition structurally intact and freshly motivated. That is precisely what Trump’s performance accomplished. Federal officers descended on communities to conduct immigration raids, instilling fear and according the leftist retards, violent while profiling residents based on race and when the American people exercised their First Amendment right to protest, federal officers responded with recklessness, injuring and maiming community members. Again that's the lefts legitimate view of the situation.

Then the National Guard was withdrawn. The Insurrection Act was not invoked. The moment passed. And the left, which had been demoralized and directionless after the 2024 election, had its galvanizing cause handed to it on a federal platter.

This is the core strategic catastrophe. A politically defeated left, facing an opposition controlling all three branches, they needed a villain worthy of mass mobilization. Tey needed images. They needed martyrs. An ICE agent killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother and American citizen, during a violent enforcement operation. Whatever the legal and factual details of that shooting, its political consequence was the revival of a left-wing protest movement that had no energy in November 2024 and considerable energy by January 2026.

Trump’s theatrical aggression manufactured the opposition’s resurrection.

The political cost now falls on ordinary conservatives. The left is more organized, more enraged, and more legally sophisticated than it was before Trump took office. Anti-ICE infrastructure, legal networks, sanctuary protocols, community alert systems, all have been built and stress-tested in real time against Trump’s operations.

The next Democratic president inherits a civil society apparatus hardened by two years of confrontation. The right, meanwhile, has consumed two years of political capital on enforcement theater that produced fewer deportations than Obama, a wall that is 1.5% complete, and a base that was told history was being made while the machinery of resistance was being sharpened.

The critique that must be made plainly is this: if you are going to govern as an authoritarian, then govern as one. The law either bends to sovereign will or it does not. Half-measures in this domain are not a moderate position.

III. The Epstein Files: The Promise That Became the Cover-Up

Perhaps no betrayal cuts more deeply into Trump’s populist credibility than the Epstein files saga, because it combined a solemn campaign promise, bipartisan democratic pressure, and the specific suspicion, growing louder on both the right and the left, that powerful elites are protected by powerful institutions, and that Trump had become exactly the kind of powerful man who needed protecting.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised repeatedly to release the Epstein files. Trump had long resisted the release of additional files from the DOJ investigation into Epstein and Maxwell, despite promising on the campaign trail that he would do so if reelected.

 He spent 2025 actively blocking their release, downplaying the significance of the case, and at times lashing out at Republicans who demanded transparency. He was and still is actively downplaying the significance of the files, lashing out against Republicans who demanded the release of information about other potential perpetrators. 

Congress forced his hand. The House voted 427–1 to pass the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the Senate passed it via unanimous consent, and Trump signed it into law and by the way not because he wanted to, but because the margin was veto-proof and the political cost of refusal was too high. The law required the DOJ to release all files within 30 days.

What followed was a masterpiece of compliant non-compliance.

On December 19, the DOJ released the first batch of Epstein files, violating U.S. law in failing to release all the files by that day. Many documents contained the classic extensive redactions, that have been posted about to oblivion, with hundreds of pages entirely blacked out. 

The initial release drew criticism from Democratic and Republican lawmakers as well as Epstein survivors because never-before-seen material was EXTREMELY limited. 

Even more damningly, the DOJ removed some documents from the public database where accusations against Jeffrey Epstein also mention Trump, including what appear to be more than 50 pages of FBI interviews, as well as notes from conversations with a woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse when she was a minor. The DOJ declined to answer questions about what was removed and why.

A December 2025 poll found that 55% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the Epstein investigation, while only 26% approved. Among Republicans, 74% supported releasing the files.

 His own base, not the left, not the media, HIS OWN BASE, broke against him on this issue. The man who sold himself as the enemy of the powerful elite protecting Epstein became, in the eyes of a majority of Republicans, the man protecting Epstein.

In April 2026, Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, reportedly due to her handling of the Epstein files.

 The scapegoating of Bondi allowed Trump to gesture at accountability while insulating himself from the underlying questions. It was elegant and cynical. And It changed nothing.

IV. The January 6 Pardons: Done, But Not as Promised

To his credit, Trump delivered the J6 pardons, and it is worth acknowledging that this was a genuine act of political courage in the face of institutional opposition. On January 20, 2025, Trump granted blanket clemency to all people, nearly 1,600, convicted of or awaiting trial or sentencing for offenses related to the January 6 Capitol attack. 

But the delivery was messier and more ambiguous than the promise. Trump had said he would pardon the rioters on his “first day” except for any he might deem “radical, crazy,” while then-VP-elect Vance stated pardons should go to those who “protested peacefully,” not those who acted violently.

 The pardons did not extend universally to all J6-related legal consequences. Trump’s pardons apply only to people “convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021,” leaving some defendants still facing charges from other alleged incidents.

 This means that for some J6 defendants facing related prosecutions in other jurisdictions, the promise of full clemency was never fully honored.

V. The Cost of Living: The Promise AMERICANS Paid To Be Broke

Trump won the 2024 election in part because Americans felt economically crushed under Biden. He promised not just to lower inflation but to obliterate it and to make America affordable again through deregulation, energy production, and the forceful renegotiation of trade.

“I will cut your energy bills in half within 12 months,” he said. Grocery prices would fall. The economic suffering would end.

The record is mixed, and the administration has cherry-picked the favorable data while ignoring the structural damage its own policies have inflicted.

On inflation itself, the numbers are modest at best. CPI inflation was 2.7% in the closing months of 2024, and remained at 2.7% for the 12 months ending in November 2025.  Inflation did not rise dramatically but it also did not fall. And critically, the price level did not come down. Trump’s claim that prices declined is, in the words of one Harvard economist, “not remotely true.” 

 The United States collected $187 billion more in tariff revenue in 2025 than in 2024, a nearly 200% increase, with businesses footing roughly 80% of the bill last year. But businesses are starting to pass those costs to customers.

 JPMorgan estimated that that 80% corporate absorption could shrink to 20% later in 2026,  meaning the tariff pain is still arriving.

The OECD predicts the U.S. could have the highest inflation in the G7 by the end of 2026, in large part due to the ongoing impact of the war in Iran.

 Meanwhile, electricity prices increased by 2.5 times more than the annual inflation rate in 2025 which was the highest annual increase since December 2014. Healthcare costs exploded as for 2026, net ACA premium payments were expected to increase 114% from the prior year as the enhanced premium tax credits expired.

 1.4 million fewer Americans selected marketplace plans in 2026. 

The administration gestures at egg prices falling and mortgage rates easing. These are real. They are also wildly insufficient as counter-weights to a structural cost-of-living regime that is making ordinary American households measurably poorer.

VI. Foreign Entanglements: The Peace Candidate Who Made New Wars

Trump ran in 2024 as the peace candidate. He would end Ukraine in “24 hours”. He would “get out of the Middle East”. He would stop the bleeding of American treasure and credibility across entanglements that served te world and usually world Jewry, not American, interests. His base cheered loudly. It was a powerful, coherent vision.

The vision did not survive contact with the presidency.

Trump repeatedly touted that he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, but has since walked back the pledge. First extending the self-imposed deadline to six months, then saying he was being “a little bit sarcastic” about the 24-hour timeframe.

 More than a year into his term, the war remains unresolved, with a U.S.-drafted 28-point peace plan at an impasse. Moscow refuses to slow its advance, and Ukraine rejects demands to relinquish territory without security guarantees. 

The 24 hours became 6 months became “we’re getting close to something” became a ceasefire framework that Russia rejected.

On the broader foreign policy front, the contradiction is even starker. Trump has resorted to the use of force in Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and the Caribbean and Pacific. A list of interventions that would have appalled the non-interventionist wing of his coalition. The capture of Venezuelan President Maduro in January 2026 was the only triumph.

The man who promised us he would end forever wars is conducting smaller, newer ones while the old ones drag on. The promise of non-entanglement was never operationally coherent, but its complete inversion with more deployments, more interventions, more military engagement across more theaters — representing a continuation of the founding premise — are added, the ongoing conflict with Iran is crowned.

VII. Charlie Kirk and the Limits of Rage

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at Utah Valley University, assassinated by a 22-year-old sniper as he debated students on campus. Kirk was fatally shot in the neck with a single bullet by a gunman positioned on the roof of a building approximately 142 yards away. The shooter, Tyler James Robinson, surrendered the following day and was charged with aggravated murder with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. Interestingly his parents went with him to turn himself in, but Indian Street shifter and FBI director Kash Patel decided to claim “we did it”?

Kirk was a genuine ally to Trump and his admin. Described as “something of a kingmaker” and a “driving force” in Trump’s presidential campaigns.

 A man with deep personal ties to Trump and enormous influence over the MAGA youth movement was murdered on a college campus by a politically motivated killer.

Trump’s response was hardly emotionally present and strategically hollow. In a video address, Trump said Kirk was “a martyr for truth and freedom” and called the act “terrorism,” connecting it rhetorically to his own assassination attempt in Butler, attacks on ICE agents, and other incidents of “radical left political violence.”

 The speech, rare at this time, was affecting. It was also primarily a political instrument, cataloguing enemies rather than prescribing accountability.

What he did not choose was structural action. The demand from the base was clear: if the left can call January 6 an act of political terrorism requiring institutional response, then the assassination of a MAGA icon by a politically motivated shooter demands equivalent if not greater institutional force. White House adviser Stephen Miller labeled left-wing political groups “a vast domestic terror movement,” and White House officials “promised a government-wide crackdown.” But don't we arrest terrorist? 

The crackdown manifested primarily as rhetorical escalation and the firing of workers who posted flippant comments online. Hundreds were dismissed from their jobs. Jimmy Kimmel was briefly pulled off the air. These are not national security responses. They are meaningless culture war maneuvers.

The base wanted prosecutorial force against organizations they believed incited political violence. They got temporary firing of late-night hosts.

The Pattern: The Promise Is A Product

What tes all of these failures together? The wall, deportations, the Epstein files, the Insurrection Act, the post-Kirk crackdown, the Butler accountability, the Ukraine peace, the cost of living, the Iran war, etc, is a single operating principle: the promise is a product.

Trump is a man who understands that his base responds to the declaration of intent more than the verification of result. “We’re building the wall” is functionally interchangeable with “the wall is built” in the emotional economy of MAGA.

The theatrical aggression toward enemies is more satisfying than their actual defeat.

Trump, maybe, if I'm giving maximum leeway genuinely believes many of the things he says, at least in the moment he says them. He is a man of declaration and not execution. And the gap between those two things, multiplied across every major promise of his second term, has produced an administration that is loud, aggressive, dramatic, embarrassing, and underwhelming on delivery.

The base is to noticing. Many already have. The righteous anger that Trump cultivated so effectively, at elites, at institutions, at the “deep state,” at the corrupt few who protect themselves at the expense of the many is beginning, in small but measurable ways, to turn toward the man who promised to be its instrument.

The Accountability That MAGA Deserves

What the base deserves and really what the country deserves, is accountability held consistently: not only against enemies but against allies who promise and fail to deliver. The same analytical honesty that demands accountability from the FBI, from the DOJ, from the intelligence community, from Epstein’s network all must also be applied to the man who promised to dismantle all of it.

A wall of 30 completed miles. Deportation numbers obscured behind creative statistics. Epstein files protected rather than exposed. ICE agents abandoned to hostile streets while the Insurrection Act stays in its scabbard. A peace candidate presiding over new military interventions on multiple continents. A murdered ally mourned in rhetoric, unavenged in policy. And so much more.

The promise and the record stand apart. The distance between them is the measure of this presidency. The people who chanted the loudest deserve to know it.

Part I closed with an admission. The structural critique of democracy was offered without a clean alternative. The transition problem, what comes after, how it is built, and how it avoids reproducing the pathologies it replaces was left open. This was intellectual honesty. The diagnosis had to be completed before the prescription could be written, and a prescription offered before the disease is fully understood is ideology.

The disease is now understood. Democracy fails because it grounds authority in popular affirmation, which selects for ego-performance over virtue, produces industrialized identity escalation, and builds a permanent bureaucratic apparatus that outlasts and neutralizes every political mandate directed against it. It cannot be reformed from within because the mechanisms of reform are controlled by the apparatus being reformed.

The question that remains is the hard one: what does a political order look like that is designed with clear eyes about human nature, that does not require citizens to be angels or leaders to be philosophers in order to function, that concentrates authority decisively enough to govern and distributes accountability clearly enough to prevent tyranny, and that is grounded in something more durable than the manufactured consent of the next electoral cycle?

Here I will offer an answer. It is offered as a serious structural alternative, one drawn from the longest-running successful governance traditions in Western history, adapted to the present with full awareness of the problems it must solve.

The answer is theocratic monarchy: a sovereign whose authority is grounded in divine mandate, administered through the moral framework of the Catholic Church, disciplined by natural law, and oriented toward the genuine flourishing of its people rather than the perpetuation of its own process.

I. Why Monarchy: The Structural Case

The case for monarchy begins with the structural analysis developed in Part I and asks: what form of political authority most directly addresses the failures democracy has produced?

Democracy’s central failure, as established, is the legitimacy mechanism. Authority grounded in popular affirmation selects for performance over substance, produces continuous ego-escalation, and is structurally incapable of taking unpopular action regardless of whether that action is necessary. It cannot tell a population hard truths. It cannot make decisions whose costs are immediate and whose benefits are generational. It cannot resist the organized pressure of concentrated financial interests because those interests have learned to speak the language of popular legitimacy more fluently than the population itself.

Monarchy solves this at the root. A monarch’s authority does not derive from popular approval. It derives from a source that is prior to and independent of the population’s preferences — in the framework proposed here, from divine mandate mediated through natural law and confirmed by the Church. This means the monarch can govern for the long term rather than the next election. He can take necessary but unpopular action.

He can resist the pressure of financial interests because his legitimacy does not depend on their support. He can tell the truth about what the country requires because his authority is not contingent on whether the population likes what it hears.

The objection presents itself:

what prevents the monarch from becoming a tyrant? This is the correct question and it requires a serious answer rather than dismissal.

The answer has three parts.

First, the moral framework. A monarch who rules under God and within the Catholic moral tradition is a man whose authority is conditional on its exercise in accordance with the natural law he is sworn to uphold. The Church does not merely bless the monarch, it holds him accountable to a standard that is independent of his preferences. History records many Catholic monarchs who were checked, rebuked, and in extreme cases excommunicated by Rome for governance that violated this standard.

The Church’s institutional authority at its best, is the most durable accountability mechanism Western civilization has ever produced.

Second, the structure of counsel:

The monarch proposed here rules with advisors drawn from the Church’s intellectual and moral tradition. Men formed in Thomistic philosophy, in natural law reasoning, in the long institutional memory of an organization that has governed souls and shaped civilizations for two thousand years. This is not a committee that can veto the monarch. It is a body of genuine wisdom that the monarch is obligated to consult and publicly account for departing from. The difference between this and democratic advisory structures is that the counsel is grounded in a stable moral tradition rather than in the shifting preferences of constituencies.

Third, the purpose of authority:

A monarch whose legitimacy derives from divine mandate is accountable to a judge who is not impressed by poll numbers. The Catholic tradition is explicit about this: authority is a trust held on behalf of God and the people. A ruler who governs in defiance of natural law, who enriches himself at the expense of his people, who uses his authority for private rather than public ends, is committing a sin that has consequences beyond the political. This may sound abstract to a secularized audience. It was not abstract to the civilizations that built the most durable political order in Western history under precisely this framework.

II. Why Catholic: The Philosophical Foundation

The choice of Catholicism as the governing moral framework is not arbitrary, and this dissertation owes the reader a serious defense of it rather than an assumption of its correctness.

The Catholic intellectual tradition, specifically in its Thomistic expression, represents the most sophisticated synthesis of reason and revelation in Western thought. Thomas Aquinas built a philosophical architecture that was grounded in Aristotelian metaphysics and was refined through centuries of scholastic debate that draws a comprehensive account of natural law, political authority, and human flourishing from first principles accessible to reason. The natural law tradition does not require faith to understand, even if it requires faith to fully embrace. It argues that there is a moral order built into the structure of reality, that this order is knowable through reason, and that political authority is legitimate only insofar as it governs in accordance with it.

This is directly relevant to the structural problems diagnosed in Part I. Democratic systems fail, in part, because they have no stable moral foundation. No account of human good that is prior to and independent of what the majority currently prefers. The moral framework shifts with the electorate. What was prohibited yesterday is mandated today. What is celebrated today will be condemned tomorrow. There is no ground beneath the preferences, no standard by which the preferences can be evaluated, no basis for telling a population that what it currently wants is wrong.

Natural law provides this ground. It says that human beings have a nature that they are ordered toward certain ends by virtue of what they are and that political authority serves its legitimate function when it supports the conditions under which human beings can flourish in accordance with that nature. The natural law tradition is, in fact, strongly resistant to state overreach precisely because it grounds human dignity and human rights in something the state did not create and cannot revoke. The Church’s social teaching from Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum through the subsequent tradition of Catholic social doctrine represents a sustained argument against both the unlimited state and the unlimited market, grounded in a conception of the human person that neither liberalism nor socialism can accommodate.

The relationship with Rome proposed here does not desire or intend to establish the Pope as king. The relationship is one of moral counsel, spiritual authority, and institutional accountability. The monarch governs his temporal domain according to his own judgment, but that judgment is formed within a tradition, advised by men formed in that tradition, and accountable to an institution that has maintained the tradition across two millennia of political upheaval.

This is the relationship that produced the civilization of medieval Christendom at its best, a civilization in which temporal and spiritual authority were understood as complementary rather than competing, each operating in its proper domain, each checking the potential excesses of the other.

The monarch rules under God and not under Rome. But ruling under God, understood in the Catholic tradition, is a public obligation with specific content to govern justly. To protect the weak, to punish the wicked, to maintain the conditions under which the family, the Church, and the intermediate institutions of civil society can flourish.

This obligation is the condition of legitimate authority.

III. The Structural Architecture: How It Actually Functions

Philosophical foundations require institutional expression. A theocratic monarchy is a governing structure with specific features designed to address the specific failures of democratic/oligarchical governance.

The Monarch

The monarch holds sovereign authority. He is not elected, not term-limited, and not accountable to any popular constituency in the democratic sense.

His authority is hereditary, grounded in the principle that continuity of rule produces continuity of vision and prevents the short-termism that democratic electoral cycles enforce. He is the final decision-maker on matters of war, foreign policy, major national legislation, and the appointment and removal of senior officials.

He is not, however, unlimited. He is bound by the natural law framework, publicly and formally. His coronation is a sacramental act that includes explicit vows to govern justly, to protect the Church, to defend the weak, and to subordinate his personal interest to the common good. These vows are not ceremonial. They are the condition of his legitimacy, and their violation is grounds for the Church’s formal rebuke and, in extreme cases, the withdrawal of its recognition, which, in a civilization that takes spiritual authority seriously, is a form of accountability more durable than any electoral mechanism.

The Council of Advisors

The monarch is advised by two bodies. The first is a Council of State senior administrators, military commanders, and technical experts responsible for the actual conduct of governance. These are appointed on merit, serve at the monarch’s pleasure, and are accountable for outcomes in their domains. This is the administrative layer, deliberately insulated from popular politics and evaluated on the basis of results rather than identity performance.

The second is a Council of Conscience, advisors drawn from the Church’s intellectual tradition, appointed in consultation with Rome, whose function is not to govern but to evaluate governance against the natural law standard. They have no veto power. They have the power of formal public counsel and the obligation to advise the monarch in writing on major decisions, and the right to make that counsel public if it is ignored. This will create accountability without the paralysis we often seen in our modern system.

The monarch can overrule his conscience council BUT he cannot do so invisibly.

The Elimination of the Democratic Apparatus

Lobbying is abolished. The mechanism by which concentrated financial interests translate money into political influence is not reformed or regulated. It is eliminated. The monarch has no campaign to fund, no electoral coalition to maintain, no party apparatus to feed.

The financial incentive structure that produces regulatory capture, legislative corruption, and the systematic subordination of public interest to private wealth simply does not exist. Corporate entities are permitted to operate, regulated by a framework derived from Catholic social teaching’s principles of subsidiarity and the universal destination of goods, but they have no mechanism for converting economic power into political authority.

Political parties are abolished. The infrastructure of democratic identity escalation. the party apparatus, the professional political class, the permanent campaign, has no function in a system that does not derive authority from popular affirmation.

This eliminates the primary institutional vehicle through which ego-capture operates at scale.

Electoral politics at the national level are abolished. Local governance retains significant authority, the principle of subsidiarity, central to Catholic social teaching, holds that decisions should be made at the lowest level of organization capable of making them competently.

Towns govern towns. Provinces govern provinces. The monarch governs what only the monarch can realistically govern effectively: war, foreign policy, the national legal framework, and the protection of the natural law standard against local corruption or deviation.

IV. The Crackdown: Corruption, Lobbying, and Corporate Subversion

The failure of every modern state democratic or otherwise to maintain genuine accountability has a common root: the absence of consequences severe enough to deter those with the most to gain from corruption. Democratic systems are particularly vulnerable because the financial interests that benefit from regulatory capture are also the financial interests that fund the campaigns of those nominally overseeing them.

What I have proposed here eliminates the structural incentive for this capture, as described above.

But structural reform requires enforcement, and enforcement requires a clarity about consequences that modern governance has entirely abandoned.

Corruption in public office, meaning the use of political authority for personal financial gain, is treated as a category of crime distinct from and more serious than ordinary theft. It is a betrayal of a sacred trust and treason.

The natural law tradition is explicit: those who hold authority hold it for others, not for themselves. The official who takes a bribe, the administrator who directs contracts to his associates, the judge who sells his verdicts, these are traitors to the order they were entrusted to maintain. The penalties reflect this. They are severe, swift, and public.

Corporate entities that attempt to subvert the political order through bribery, through the funding of influence operations, through the deliberate corruption of public officials face not merely fines but total dissolution. The legal entity is destroyed. Its principals face criminal liability. The political order is not for sale, and the attempt to purchase it carries consequences that no calculation of expected return can rightly justify.

The financial sector is regulated according to the natural law principle that money is a means, not an end. That financial instruments exist to facilitate the genuine productive activity of the economy, not to generate returns through the extraction of value from productive activity.

Usury, in the traditional sense of the term, being the extraction of profit from financial manipulation rather than genuine productive contribution is treated as the economic analogue of corruption: the use of a social instrument for private extraction at public expense.

This is the application of a moral framework to economic activity and the insistence that economic life, like political life, is embedded in and accountable to a moral order that it did not create and cannot rewrite.

V. The Imperial Strategy: Three Phases

A state of genuine political authority and moral coherence exists in a world of competing powers, and its survival as well as its capacity to demonstrate through example that an alternative to liberal democratic order is viable, depends on its ability to project power, build alliances, and shape the international environment in its favor.

The foreign policy of the theocratic monarchy is imperial in the classical sense: it seeks not merely to defend its borders but to extend its order, its influence, and ultimately its civilization.

This is the recognition that a genuine civilization is one grounded in a coherent account of human flourishing and has an obligation to extend the conditions of that flourishing as far as its capacity allows.

The strategy is phased.

Phase One: Hemispheric Consolidation

The Monroe Doctrine, in its original formulation, was a declaration of hemispheric sovereignty and a statement that the Western Hemisphere was not available for European imperial expansion. In practice, the United States never fully honored the principle it proclaimed, alternating between hemispheric dominance and neglect according to the shifting priorities of its democratic leadership. Up until recently with with President Trumps actions in Venezuela.

The monarchy will complete what the Monroe Doctrine promised.

The Western Hemisphere is essentially our primary theater of power.

Latin America, which shares the Catholic cultural inheritance and has been systematically destabilized by a combination of American democratic nonsense and the social dissolution that follows the export of liberal cultural norms, is the natural first domain of alliance and eventual integration.

This is not conquest in the military sense, though military capacity underwrites it. It is the construction of a hemisphere-wide political and economic order.

The alternative model to both American liberal hegemony and Chinese economic colonialism is a Catholic civilizational bloc in the Western Hemisphere, organized around the principle that the hemisphere’s resources, labor, and productive capacity exist for the benefit of the hemisphere’s peoples.

The specific instruments of Phase One include: military alliances with governments willing to orient themselves toward the new order; economic relationships that prioritize genuine development; cultural investment in the intellectual and artistic tradition as the shared foundation of hemispheric identity; and the systematic exclusion of external financial interests whose operation in the hemisphere has demonstrably served foreign influence rather than our own dominance and development.

Phase Two: Civilizational Bloc Construction

Hemispheric consolidation provides the base. The second phase extends the strategic logic globally through the construction of a civilizational bloc that provides an alternative pole of order to the liberal democratic consensus and the Chinese mercantilist model.

The natural allies are those nations and civilizations that share the rejection of liberal democratic dissolution. The perception that the current global order is destroying the cultural, religious, and familial foundations of human flourishing in the name of freedom. This is a larger constituency than the Western liberal consensus acknowledges. It includes significant portions of the Catholic world in Eastern Europe. It includes the Orthodox Christian civilization centered on Russia and the broader Slavic world, with which a Catholic monarchy can maintain a relationship of civilizational respect and practical cooperation despite theological differences.

It includes the Islamic world’s conservative majority, which shares the Catholic tradition’s resistance to the sexual revolution, the dissolution of the family, and the subordination of all social life to market logic.

This is a strategic alignment of civilizations that, for different reasons grounded in their own traditions, reject the particular form of dissolution that liberal democratic modernity is exporting.

Phase Three: Global Presence and Order Maintenance

The empire seeks to ensure that no single hostile power governs the world, that the global order remains genuinely multipolar, that the sea lanes remain open, that the financial systems that facilitate genuine trade, remain functional, and that the civilizations that have aligned with the bloc maintain the security to develop according to their own traditions.

This requires a military capacity that requires power projection with the ability to impose costs on actors who threaten the order. To enforce the bloc’s collective security commitments, and to demonstrate continuously that the civilization backing the order has the will and the capacity to defend it.

The foreign policy that emerges from this framework is simultaneously more modest and more ambitious than American liberal democratic imperialism. More modest because it does not seek to remake or rebuild every society in its image or to export its political model as a universal truth. More ambitious because it is pursuing civilizational survival and by extension the preservation and propagation of an account of our nations flourishing that the current global order is actively destroying.

VI. The Citizens First Principle: Social Architecture

An imperial foreign policy and a strong central authority are only legitimate if they are genuinely oriented toward the flourishing of the people they govern.

The Catholic social teaching tradition provides a specific and demanding account of what citizens-first governance requires. The principle of subsidiarity: decisions are made at the lowest competent level, preserving the authority of families, parishes, guilds, and local communities against absorption by the central state. The principle of solidarity: the wealth of the civilization belongs, in a moral sense, to all of its members, and those who generate great wealth do so within a social framework they did not create and to which they owe genuine obligation.

These are pre-liberal principles and older than both capitalism and socialism, derived from a philosophical tradition that predates the industrial economy and has no interest in defending either its excesses or their progressive mirror image.

The natural law framework does not prohibit property, profit, or economic inequality. It insists that all of these exist within a moral order that they are accountable to, and that the state’s function is to maintain that accountability rather than to manage it away through bureaucratic procedure.

In practice, this means a social architecture organized around the family as the fundamental unit. Tax structures, housing policy, labor law, and cultural policy all oriented toward the stability and flourishing of families rather than the maximization of individual economic participation.

It means a genuine social safety net grounded in the principle of human dignity rather than in the management of political constituencies. Care for the poor, the sick, and the elderly treated as a moral obligation of the civilization, not as a bureaucratic program to be funded and defunded according to electoral incentives or voting.

It means an education system oriented toward the formation of citizens capable of virtue and not workers optimized for the labor market, not consumers trained for the attention economy. Human beings formed in the intellectual and moral tradition of the civilization they are inheriting and will be responsible for continuing.

VII. The Transition: How We Get There

The hardest question, as always, is the transition. How does a civilization currently governed by democratic proceduralism, captured by financial interests, and culturally committed to liberal individualism arrive at the order described above?

The honest answer is that it does not arrive there through democratic means. The mechanisms of democratic reform are controlled by the apparatus that reform would dismantle.

This was established in Part I and it bears repeating here: the transition problem cannot be solved by the tools of the system being transitioned away from.

What transitions of this character have historically required is a convergence of three conditions.

First, the delegitimization of the existing order. The widespread perception, across a sufficient portion of the population, that it has failed fundamentally and cannot be fixed from within. This condition is increasingly present in the democratic world. The perception that democratic governance is theater, that elections do not change the actual direction of policy, that the permanent administrative apparatus governs regardless of electoral outcomes. This perception is no longer confined to dissident intellectual circles. It is becoming the common sense of large populations, and rightly so.

Second, a coalition capable of seizing and holding authority through the transition period. This is the most demanding requirement and the one for which the least preparation has been made. The intellectual tradition described in this dissertation. The Catholic natural law framework, the critique of democratic legitimacy, the positive vision of theocratic monarchy and imperial civilization, must be translated into a political force with the organizational capacity, the military backing, and the institutional relationships necessary to govern.

Intellectual clarity is necessary but not sufficient. Power requires organization and networks.

Third, and most importantly, leadership of genuine virtue. The transition will produce its own ego-capture dynamics. The revolutionary moment always attracts those who are motivated primarily by the desire for power rather than by genuine commitment to the order they claim to be building.

The difference between a successful civilizational founding and another iteration of the same failure is the quality of the people who lead it is their capacity to maintain their principles under the pressure of the transition, to resist the temptation to betray the stated aims for personal advantage, and to build institutions that will outlast their own tenure and resist the capture that eventually claims every political project.

This is a requirement that any honest political thinker must acknowledge. The monarchy does not solve the ‘human problem’ but it does structure political authority in a way that is far more honest about said human problem than democracy is. It is more resistant to the specific pathologies that democratic structures produce.

The natural law tradition, the Church’s institutional memory, the principle of the monarch’s accountability to a standard prior to and independent of his own preferences. these are conditions that make virtue possible and its absence visible. In the end, that is as much as any political system can do.

Conclusion: The Civilization Worth Building

The civilization described here is by no means a utopia. It is my serious attempt to answer the question that Part I left open: what comes after, and how does it not reproduce what it replaces?

It comes after through the patient construction of intellectual clarity, organizational capacity, and the formation of leaders whose commitment to the order they are building is genuine rather than performed.

It avoids reproducing the old failures by grounding authority in something prior to and independent of popular affirmation, by building accountability into the moral framework rather than the electoral mechanism, and by being honest from the beginning about the relationship between power and virtue.

The Catholic tradition is the foundation not because it is the only tradition with something to offer, but because it is the tradition most capable of providing what the current moment most urgently requires: an account of human nature that is neither naively optimistic nor brutally cynical, an institutional memory long enough to recognize the current crisis as one iteration of a recurring pattern, and a philosophical framework comprehensive enough to ground a genuine civilization rather than merely a political arrangement.

The empire is pursued because a civilization that does not extend itself is a civilization that retreats. Retreat, in the current civilizational contest, is not a neutral option. The choice is not between expansion and peace. It is between the extension of an order grounded in human flourishing and the extension of orders that are not.

The citizens come first is a theological conviction: the people entrusted to the monarch’s governance are souls, each of infinite dignity, each ordered toward an end that the political order exists to support rather than to manage.

Governance that treats its people as a constituency to be managed, a workforce to be optimized, or a market to be exploited is a betrayal of the trust that constitutes political authority in the first place.

This is the answer to democratic failure. Not the next system dressed in new language. Not the oligarchy of capital rationalized as meritocracy. Not the managed decline of a civilization that has forgotten what it was built for.

A king. A Church. A people. An empire. Built in that order, for that purpose, under that authority.

Everything else is process.

The Philosophical Foundation:

Any serious critique of democratic governance must begin with philosophical anthropology and with a clear account of what human beings actually are, as opposed to what democratic theory requires them to be.

Democratic theory, in its classical formulations from Locke through Rousseau through the American founders, presupposes a political subject capable of rational deliberation, capable of setting aside personal interest in service of collective welfare, and capable of recognizing and endorsing genuinely good governance. In this model, the citizen is a reasoning agent who participates in collective self-governance because doing so serves his rational self-interest and his commitment to justice.

Schopenhauer demolished this anthropology before democratic theory had fully consolidated itself. The will is blind, insatiable, irrational and is the primary reality of human existence.

Reason is its servant, a sophisticated instrument for rationalizing what the will has already decided to pursue. The Enlightenment picture of the rational political subject is inverted. We desire, and then we reason in defense of those desires.

This has immediate and devastating consequences for democratic theory. If the political subject is a will-driven organism engaged in continuous competition for status, security, and dominance, then aggregating such subjects through voting produces the collision of competing wills, dressed in the language of reason and justice.

Nietzsche extended this analysis into the social domain with characteristic precision. The herd, he observed, redirects it. Within any collective, the most powerful psychological drive is toward dominance within the group. The rhetoric of collective purpose provides the moral cover for individual ambition. The more totalizing the collective identity, the more it demands complete identification from its members and the more perfectly it serves as a vehicle for the ambitions of those who define it.

Spengler completed the historical arc. Civilizations, in his account, follow organic trajectories from culture to civilization to decline. The democratic phase is a symptom is the point at which a civilization’s creative spiritual force has exhausted itself and been replaced by the politics of money, mass manipulation, and the slow dissolution of everything that made the culture worth preserving. Democracy is the announcement of its terminal phase.

These thinkers do not agree on everything. But they converge on a single foundational point that democratic theory cannot absorb without destroying itself: human beings, organized into collectives. They weaponize the collective in service of those drives. The collective is its most powerful amplification.

How Democracy Uniquely Amplifies the Ego-Capture Problem

The objection presents itself immediately: every political system suffers from elite capture, factional competition, and the subordination of public good to private ambition. Monarchies have their court intrigues. Military regimes have their officer factions. Theocracies have their clerical power struggles. Why is democracy uniquely implicated?

The answer lies in the legitimacy mechanism, the structural answer every political system gives to the question of why authority should be obeyed.

Monarchical and aristocratic systems ground legitimacy in fixed sources that do not require continuous popular affirmation: bloodline, divine sanction, conquest, tradition. These bases are not dependent on ongoing mass consent. The king does not need his subjects to believe in him every four years. His authority does not expire. This means his political survival is not structurally dependent on the continuous management of mass psychology. Court intrigue exists, but it is confined to a small elite and operates through mechanisms that do not require the mobilization of mass identity.

Democracy grounds legitimacy in popular will. This is an operational requirement that must be continuously satisfied. Democratic authority must be reproduced through the ongoing consent of large populations. A democratic leader who loses public support loses everything. Authority in a democracy is a performance that must be renewed.

This single structural feature changes everything downstream. When your authority derives from popular affirmation, the performance of popular identity becomes the primary instrument of political power. You need people to feel represented and to feel that you are the authentic expression of who they are and what they believe. And that feeling is a tribal, emotional response to identity signaling.

Democracy, therefore, makes ego-escalation the mechanism of political selection. The system rewards the most resonant political actor, the one who can most effectively mirror a constituency’s self-image back at them in amplified form.

The demagogue is its logical product. The selection filter this creates is precise and ruinous. Democratic systems filter for charisma over competence, emotional intensity over analytical rigor, the performance of conviction over its substance. They filter against the leader who tells a constituency something it does not want to hear, because that leader loses votes. They filter against the leader who maintains genuine independence from their base, because that leader is called a traitor. The system has a specific and effective immune response to anyone who resists subordinating themselves to collective identity performance.

Furthermore, democracy industrializes this dynamic through the infrastructure it requires. Mass media, political parties, polling operations, advertising firms, and social media platforms are democracy’s operational nervous system. Each institution exists to translate individual psychological need into political energy at scale. They are ego-amplification machines whose entire function is to identify which emotional triggers produce the most intense group cohesion and to deliver those triggers continuously to the largest possible audience.

No previous political system produced anything equivalent. The court intrigue of Versailles was contained within a few hundred aristocrats. The purity spirals of revolutionary tribunals burned hot and brief. What democracy produces is a permanent, industrialized, algorithmically optimized ego-escalation engine running simultaneously across every identity category in the population, without interruption, maintained by billions of dollars of professional infrastructure whose business model depends on its continuation.

The final mechanism is the accountability inversion. In hierarchical systems, accountability flows upward, the subordinate answers to the superior for outcomes. In a democracy, authority flows up from the population, which means accountability is supposed to flow downward. leaders answer to constituents for results. In practice, because the selection filter rewards identity performance rather than policy outcomes, democratic leaders are accountable not for what they achieve but for how convincingly they perform group membership. A leader who fails on every measurable dimension but maintains strong identity signaling survives. A leader who succeeds on every measurable dimension but is perceived as insufficiently committed to the group does not.

The rational response to this incentive structure is to maximize performance and minimize accountability for results, which is what we observe everywhere, continuously.

Human ego is the fuel. Democratic legitimacy structures are the engine. The argument is that democratic structures select for and reward behaviors that accelerate ego-capture with a precision, continuity, and institutional depth that no previous political system has matched.

The Observed Phenomenon: Collective Identity and Its Betrayal

Abstract structural argument requires concrete illustration. The dynamics described above are observable in real time, in recent history, by anyone willing to look without the distortion of partisan investment.

The trajectory of Black Lives Matter as an organization is a near-perfect case study. Whatever one’s position on the political goals the movement claimed to pursue, the observable facts of its institutional development are not seriously disputed. The organization raised more than $90 million after the summer of 2020. Its co-founder subsequently purchased four homes totaling several million dollars. Internal disputes about financial accountability led to public fracture among the organization’s leadership. The stated mission — reducing violence against Black Americans, reforming police accountability, produced no durable legislative achievement commensurate with the scale of the mobilization.

What did occur was the construction of a powerful identity brand, the elevation of its principals to significant media and social status, and the generation of substantial personal wealth for those at the top of the organizational structure. This is the predicted outcome of the ego-capture dynamic operating within a democratic identity collective. The collective existed, in practice, as a vehicle for its leadership’s ambitions. The genuine grievances of its base were the fuel. The leadership was the engine’s beneficiaries.

This pattern repeats across the ideological spectrum with such regularity that it should be recognized as a law rather than a coincidence. Every mass political movement that achieves scale within a democratic system undergoes the same transformation: the original animating energy is genuine, the early leadership is often sincere, and then the organizational logic of survival and growth takes over. Fundraising requires continuous emotional activation. Status competition within the leadership produces escalating rhetoric. The movement’s stated goals recede as the movement’s institutional perpetuation becomes the primary objective. The base is managed rather than served.

What is remarkable is how rarely this is named. Kanye West, in his erratic and sometimes incoherent public commentary, has demonstrated a recurrent willingness to name it, to say, about specific powerful institutions and individuals, that the stated purpose is not the operational reality. His observation about George Bush during the Katrina response was a perception, delivered without calculation of social consequence, that the performance of concern was not equivalent to its substance. This disposition is the refusal to perform agreement with what one can plainly see is false and is genuinely rare and genuinely valuable.

It is also genuinely insufficient as an epistemology, and the dissertation must be honest about this. The same cognitive disposition that produced these moments of clarity has also produced extended public breakdowns, conspiracy thinking, and statements that were demonstrably false. The lesson is that social pressure systematically suppresses certain true perceptions, and that this suppression is a specific feature of democratic culture, which requires the continuous performance of acceptable beliefs. The valuable thing Ye occasionally demonstrates is the temporary suspension of the social cost calculation, which reveals how much of what passes for reasoned public discourse is actually managed performance.

Solzhenitsyn’s formulation remains the better model: do not live by lies. This is not the same as saying everything. It is the more demanding discipline of refusing to affirm publicly what you know privately to be false. Democratic culture, because it grounds authority in popular affirmation, generates enormous and continuous pressure to affirm falsehoods to maintain standing within the collective. The person who refuses this pressure is resisting the specific mechanism by which democratic systems maintain their legitimacy against the evidence of their own failure.

The Founding Betrayal: Washington and the Institutionalization of the Middleman

The American founding represents the clearest historical illustration of the problem of revolutionary legitimacy and its squandering.

A revolution succeeds. The existing order has been overthrown. The old legitimacy has been destroyed, and nothing has yet replaced it. This is the moment of maximum political possibility. The moment when the shape of the new order is genuinely undetermined, and the revolutionary leadership has the authority, the popular energy, and the historical momentum to build something that could last.

What is required in this moment is a consolidation. Revolutionary legitimacy expires. The energy of popular mobilization dissipates. The institutional resistance of established interests reconstitutes itself. The window is narrow and the decision irreversible: use the authority while it exists, and build structures that will hold, or allow it to dissipate into proceduralism and watch the new order be slowly captured by the forces the revolution was supposed to defeat.

Washington failed this test through a philosophical commitment to republican virtue that was genuine, admirable, and catastrophically mistimed. The people who had fought and won a revolution understood, with the instinctive political intelligence of those who have actually seized power, that what the moment required was a new authority. They wanted Washington to be a king out of clarity about what a durable political order requires.

Washington declined. He institutionalized instead. He built the machinery of republican deliberation, separation of powers, electoral cycles, judicial review and set the precedent of voluntary transfer of power. These decisions were made in the sincere belief that they would produce lasting liberty. What they actually produced was a permanent apparatus for the absorption and neutralization of political will.

The middleman, the institutional process that stands between popular will and political outcome. Which was built deliberately by men who believed that mediation was protection. Unmediated popular will produces its own horrors, as the French Revolution demonstrated within years of the American Revolution. But the American solution to the problem of unchecked power was to build a system in which power could barely be exercised at all. in which every significant decision requires the alignment of so many competing institutions and interests that the default outcome is stasis.

The result, two and a half centuries later, is a political system in which the process has entirely consumed the purpose. Legislation is written to survive procedural challenges, to satisfy the competing demands of institutional stakeholders, and to provide political cover for those who vote for it. The administrative apparatus that has grown around this legislative structure is older, more continuous, and more deeply embedded than any elected government. It has its own interests, its own culture, and its own mechanisms of self-preservation. It answers, in any operational sense, to no one.

This is a fulfillment of the founders’ design. The system was built to prevent the concentration of power. It succeeded. It prevented the concentration of power so thoroughly that the state can no longer act with the decisiveness that governance of a complex society requires, and the vacuum has been filled by permanent bureaucracy and the financial interests that have learned to navigate it.

The Tyranny of Small Decisions: Power, Momentum, and the Lesson of 2016

There is a principle that operates in politics as it does in physics: force applied at the moment of maximum leverage produces effects that no amount of force applied later can replicate. The window for transformative political action is concentrated at the moment of arrival, when institutional resistance has not yet reconstituted itself, and popular mandate has not yet been spent.

The Trump administration’s first term is the most instructive recent illustration of what happens when this principle is ignored.

The political moment of 2016 was exceptional by any serious measure. An insurgent candidacy defeated the established consensus of both political parties simultaneously. The candidate won despite the explicit opposition of his own party’s institutional leadership, the unified opposition of the media establishment, and a Democratic candidate who represented the fullest expression of the managerial class the electorate was rejecting. The mandate was a signal of civilizational impatience and a mass perception that the existing order had failed and that the population was prepared to accept radical disruption in exchange for genuine change.

What was done with this mandate? In the first weeks and months. The period of maximum leverage. The administration negotiated with its opponents, deferred to institutional norms it had been elected to challenge, and allowed the permanent bureaucratic apparatus to establish its dominance over the political appointees nominally directing it. Each small accommodation set a precedent. Each deferred confrontation ratified the authority of the institutions being deferred to. The ceiling was established early, and all subsequent action was negotiated downward from it.

The structural insight here is is that democratic systems are specifically designed to exhaust political mandates through procedural friction. Every bold action taken by a democratic executive is immediately subject to judicial challenge, media mobilization, legislative resistance, and the constant background pressure of the next electoral cycle. The system only needs to delay it until the mandate expires and mandates in democratic systems always do.

By the second term, the foundational consolidation that the first term required had not occurred. The administrative apparatus had not been reformed. The cultural institutions had not been challenged at the level of their funding and accreditation. The legal frameworks that protected the permanent government had not been dismantled. The opposition had four years to reorganize, litigate, and build resistance infrastructure. The administration returned to power without the accumulated authority that a first term of decisive action would have built, facing a more organized opposition, a more skeptical public, and an institutional apparatus that had already demonstrated its capacity to resist.

The lesson is architectural and general: power obtained must be used immediately and decisively, or it will be administered away by the institutions it was obtained to reform. Small decisions establish limits. The first decision sets the range of the possible. In a democratic system, where institutional resistance is permanent and mandate is temporary, the asymmetry always favors delay which means it always favors the existing order against any challenge to it.

This is a structural observation about democratic systems. They are engineered for stasis. They select against decisive action. They reward caution and punish boldness. Any political program that requires transformative change of any ideological character will be ground down by democratic proceduralism unless it moves faster than the system can organize resistance. This has been true of every serious reform movement in democratic history. The ones that succeeded did so by moving with a speed and decisiveness that the system’s designers would have recognized as anti-democratic. The ones that failed did so by playing by the rules of a system designed to prevent their victory.

Bureaucracy as Terminal Condition

The American administrative state is the mature expression of what democratic proceduralism produces when left to develop without interruption. It is a natural endpoint.

Bureaucracy expands according to a logic that is independent of any political direction. Agencies generate mandates. Mandates generate procedures. Procedures generate compliance requirements. Compliance requirements generate oversight mechanisms. Oversight mechanisms generate reporting structures. Each layer justifies itself by reference to the layer below it, and the entire structure justifies itself by reference to the problems that produced the original mandate, problems which, in many cases, the bureaucracy has not solved and has no institutional incentive to solve, because the existence of the problem justifies the existence of the agency.

This is the fundamental perversity of the administrative state: it is structurally incentivized against solving the problems it was created to address. An agency that eliminates the problem it was designed to manage has eliminated the justification for its own existence. The rational institutional response and institutions, like individuals, respond to incentives, is to manage problems at a level that maintains their visibility without resolving them. To treat symptoms while protecting the disease.

The objection must be addressed. The administrative state built in response to genuine coordination failures. Market failures that produced mass poverty, public health failures that produced mass death, financial system failures that produced economic catastrophe. The men who built were responding to observable, demonstrable failures of uncoordinated systems to provide basic security to large populations. Any serious critique of the administrative state must account for these problems. It must explain what alternative arrangements would have handled them and why those arrangements would not have produced comparable pathologies.

The credible answer is coordination at the scale of a modern industrial society requires institutional infrastructure. The answer is that the particular form the American administrative state has taken — insulated from electoral accountability, staffed by a permanent class with its own interests and culture, expanding continuously regardless of political direction has long since passed the point where its coordination benefits justify its costs in captured process, unaccountable power, and the systematic subordination of political will to bureaucratic inertia.

The deeper problem is that democratic legitimacy structures are uniquely ill-suited to controlling bureaucratic growth. Bureaucracies operate on timescales longer than electoral cycles. Their expertise exceeds that of any political appointee who attempts to direct them. Their institutional memory outlasts every administration. Their capacity for procedural resistance, legal challenges, slow-walking directives, strategic information management, exceeds the capacity of any temporary political leadership to overcome. Democratic systems produce the bureaucracy and then cannot control it, because the tools of democratic accountability. Elections, legislation, oversight committees. All operate through the same procedural apparatus the bureaucracy controls.

The result is a governing system in which the visible political layer. Presidents, legislators, cabinet officials, is almost entirely theatrical. The actual governance of the country is conducted by an administrative class that is minimally accountable, and whose institutional interests are systematically opposed to any political program that would reduce its scope and authority. Democracy has produced this.

The Intellectual Right and the Problem of Captured Critique

The most sophisticated intellectual challenge to democratic legitimacy in contemporary discourse emerged from an unlikely convergence of neoreactionary philosophy and Silicon Valley capital. Understanding its strengths and its failures is necessary for any serious anti-democratic political thought.

Nick Land developed the philosophical infrastructure. His accelerationism. The argument that capitalism and technology are driving toward a singularity that will destroy all existing political and social structures regardless of human preference, and that the correct response is to accelerate rather than resist this process is genuinely rigorous and genuinely disturbing. Land follows his premises to conclusions that most thinkers, including those who share his premises, are unwilling to reach. This intellectual courage is also his political limitation. His work is too strange, too extreme, and too honest about its own nihilistic implications to serve as the foundation for a political movement that needs to recruit and maintain a coalition.

Curtis Yarvin occupied the space Land created and made it usable. His Cathedral analysis, the identification of a self-reinforcing consensus among media, academic, and administrative institutions that functions as an unofficial state ideology, maintaining its dominance through the control of legitimacy and the exclusion of dissent from respectable discourse is the most useful analytical tool produced by the contemporary right. It explains with precision why democratic political victories do not produce the policy changes they nominally mandate, and why the permanent institutional apparatus always reconstitutes itself against any challenge to its authority.

Yarvin’s prescription, the Neocameral state, corporate governance applied to sovereignty, authority vested in a CEO-monarch accountable only to shareholders, is where the analysis breaks down. This solves the problem of democratic ego-capture by introducing a different and potentially worse form of elite capture: the sovereignty of capital. A state governed as a corporation in the interest of its shareholders is a state governed in the interest of whoever holds the most shares. Yarvin’s framework, followed to its conclusion, produces the formalization of the oligarchy that democratic systems have been gradually constructing for decades. It mistakes the symptom of democratic dysfunction for the disease, and proposes a cure that accelerates the underlying pathology.

His intellectual trajectory has been shaped by the social and financial network that sustains him. The alignment with Peter Thiel, whose investment in J.D. Vance represents the most direct application of tech-capital political strategy in recent American history has produced a public intellectual posture increasingly difficult to distinguish from a rationalization of technocratic oligarchy. Whether Yarvin privately endorses this destination or arrived at it through genuine intellectual development cannot be established from outside. What can be observed is that his public output has drifted consistently in the direction that serves the interests of his patrons, and that this drift follows the same pattern of ego-capture and social interest that his own analytical framework would predict.

The Cathedral analysis stands independently of Yarvin’s personal trajectory. But it is a necessary observation about the sociology of dissident intellectual production: the right has been extraordinarily successful at producing critique and extraordinarily unsuccessful at producing prescription, in part because the financial infrastructure that sustains dissident intellectual work is itself controlled by interests that benefit from the current order and have no genuine interest in its fundamental transformation.

The Transition Problem: What Comes After

A critique of democracy that ends with diagnosis is incomplete. The hardest question, the one that separates serious political thought from sophisticated complain, is the transition problem: what comes after, how does the transition occur, and how does the new order avoid reproducing the pathologies of the old?

History offers limited encouragement. Every successful challenge to a democratic or proto-democratic order in the modern era has produced one of three outcomes: military dictatorship that eventually either democratizes or calcifies into dynastic authoritarianism; revolutionary vanguard rule that produces a new class of ego-captured leaders who betray the revolution’s stated aims with remarkable speed; or the simple replacement of one oligarchic faction with another under new ideological branding. The structural problems diagnosed throughout this dissertation, ego-capture, legitimacy theater, bureaucratic self-perpetuation, they have been reproduced under new forms.

This is an argument for intellectual honesty about what the anti-democratic program actually requires. The transition period between the delegitimization of an existing order and the consolidation of a new one is historically the period of greatest political violence and greatest betrayal of stated aims. It follows from the same dynamics described throughout: the moment of revolutionary possibility is the moment of maximum ego-competition among those vying to define the new order. The purity spiral, the leadership capture, the subordination of the genuine program to factional interest. All of these accelerate in conditions of revolutionary instability.

The preconditions for a successful transition.

One that produces durable authority rather than simply a new iteration of the old failures appear to be the following:

First, a leadership of genuine rather than performed conviction, capable of maintaining independent judgment under the social pressures of the transition period. Second, an intellectual framework that is honest about the problem of power rather than euphemistic about it, that acknowledges the need for consolidated authority without pretending that authority is the same as justice. Third, institutional designs that build in accountability mechanisms that operate outside the democratic legitimacy structure, accountability to outcomes, to historical judgment, to internal standards of excellence rather than external standards of popular approval.

None of these preconditions are guaranteed by any political system. They are, in the end, dependent on the quality of the people who lead the transition — which returns the argument to the question of human virtue that the entire philosophical tradition from Plato onward has identified as the irreducible foundation of political order.

Democracy failed because it attempted to build a political system that did not require virtuous leadership. That would produce good outcomes through the mechanism of competing interests, without depending on the character of any individual. This was its most profound error. There is no mechanism that substitutes for virtue. There is no institutional design that produces good governance independently of the quality of the people who govern. The democratic project was the attempt to make politics safe for mediocrity, and it succeeded. At the cost of making politics incapable of excellence.

The alternative is the honest acknowledgment that governance requires excellence, that excellence is rare, that its cultivation is the central task of political culture, and that any system which systematically selects against it, as democracy does, a particularly elaborate form of its evasion.

Conclusion: The Honest Reckoning

Democracy promised self-governance and delivered managed consent. It promised accountability and delivered the permanent insulation of a class that answers to no election and no constituency. It promised the wisdom of collective deliberation and produced the industrialized amplification of collective ego. It promised liberty and built a bureaucratic apparatus of such complexity and self-perpetuating power that the question of who actually governs is genuinely unanswerable.

These failures are the logical outcomes of democracy as a structure, the predictable products of a system that grounds authority in popular affirmation, selects leadership through identity performance, and builds its institutional infrastructure on the continuous reproduction of mass emotional activation.

The honest reckoning ends with the recognition that the political problem is fundamentally a human problem — that the ego-capture dynamic, the legitimacy theater, the betrayal of stated aims by the logic of institutional survival are features of human organization as such, and that any political system must be designed with clear eyes about what human beings actually are rather than what democratic theory requires them to be.

What is required is the prior work: the philosophical, cultural, and ultimately personal cultivation of the kind of human being capable of genuine rather than performed virtue, independent rather than crowd-sourced judgment, and honest rather than managed engagement with reality. Politics downstream of culture. Culture downstream of character. Character downstream of philosophy.

This is harder than voting. It is also the only thing that has ever actually worked.

I think Yarvin only bought into tech acceleration because when he was younger, it was exciting and interesting.

It integrated nicely with his critique of democracy, but over time, as he gained prominence, he began shilling technocratic oligarchy/accelerationism out of financial and social interest. I'd be willing to bet he cringes at the idea of AI trans-humanist overlords just like how we cringe at wignats.

If you get down to brass tacks with it, he has only remained a part of the conversation because he strokes the ego of Thiel, who (as we all know) created Vance. Without doing so, his financial backing and social status would've dried up many, many years ago. He'd be totally irrelevant.

I've been reading a lot of Grey Zone, and he's much more digestible and interesting than Nick Land, who, I think, was literally too weird to be who Yarvin is. Yarvin essentially took his place.

I’d also like to clarify that I don’t fault Yarvin for aligning himself in this way. I believe he sees it as the best way to spread his fundamentally monarchist vision. If he needs to throw in some AI or tech glazing occasionally, then it is what it is. My disagreements with Curtis go beyond what I believe to be true in this post.  I think this is interesting and partially explains the conclusions he’s come to.

Democracy is a middleman.

If we had a king today who was working against my interests, I would advocate for a violent democratic revolution, much like the American or French Revolution, to overthrow said king.

Once my people are in power and elections are held, there would be no more elections; the new ruling party/monarchy would be established, and that ruling party would work on our behalf.

George Washington failed in this respect, as the people wanted him to be a proper monarch.

Our country revolves around endless processes. We must process something with a process, by a process, for a process, because a process relies on a process. I'd much prefer a nation that deals in actions and solutions. Bureaucracy will be the downfall of our nation, if it hasn't already destabilized us beyond repair.

The meaning of life:

The meaning of life beyond the spiritual is simply ensuring long-term meaningful happiness for yourself and those around you.

The reason why I say ‘beyond spiritual’ by the way, isn’t to disregard my faith or yours, but to offer something to those who wrestle with their personal meaning beyond that of their faith. Alan Watts asks in one of his videos, “What are you?” And goes on to say something along the lines of, "We identify ourselves somewhere behind our eyes, inside our brain." But we have fingers, we have toes, we have a face, but these things are not us. They are the soul's temporary vessel. If that’s the case, then we must work to make ourselves happy while we are here. Not in a hedonistic, selfish way. Learn, grow spiritually, physically, mentally, etc., and bring happiness to those in your life whom you care about.

Nick Fuentes and a war on two fronts:

Nick is fighting a war on many fronts ideologically. No other major political player is really doing this aside from him. The only leading opposition to America First is fighting only on one front, as they have infinite recesses and have established themselves within the rotted machine that we call our nation's capital.

AFers ultimately have to take on said establishment while also building their own network within the machine, without compromising. If done properly, this will result in change, and that change comes from the top down rather than the bottom up, which would be a suicide mission and destined for failure.

Nick has made all the right moves, and so long as America Firsters continue to garner power effectively, then a victory for our side is inevitable.

How Trump messed up:

Big decisions are easier than the small ones. When you dosmething minuscule just know that it will be the most you can ever do and it will define your limit into the foreseeable future. You will be constantly negotiating down from that point.

This is ultimately why the Trump administration, in its second term, has failed to accomplish anything. A lack of understanding of the opportunity given in 2016 led to little to no lasting political action, and the momentum declined until the start of his second term in 2024.

At the start of the second term, all good done during the first term was either washed away totally by Biden and the democrats or, at best, forgotten.

This results in a stagnant administration with little to no established authority. The democrats have no reason to negotiate with someone who has no backbone and will be gone in a few years.
